Law firm awards three college scholarships

The Huntington County law firm of Bowers, Brewer, Garrett & Wiley, LLP, has announced the winners of its 2009 educational scholarships.

Alli Harris received $500 in honor of the late James W. Bowers.

Talon Drummond and Jamon Hammel each received $250 to be used toward their continuing education.

Harris is the daughter of Kenneth and Beverly Harris, of Huntington. She plans to attend Purdue University to study secondary education. Harris has been active at Huntington North High School in Future Educators of America, girls' track, National Honor Society, Class Council 2009, Student Athletic Board, freshmen mentoring, Speech and Debate Team, choir, and marching band.

She has also participated in USA Volleyball and 4-H and is currently president of the Huntington County 4-H Junior Leaders. She tutors, volunteers at the Huntington City-Township Public Library and is a Junior Rotarian.

Drummond is the son of Denice Drummond and Jack Drummond, of Huntington, and will major in accounting at Huntington University. Drummond is involved with his church youth group and has volunteered at the University of Notre Dame as an usher during the football season.

Hammel is the son of Jeff and Marie Hammel, Andrews, and plans to attend Huntington University. At Huntington North, Hammel has been active in varsity baseball, peer tutoring, freshman mentoring, Student Athletic Board, Campus Life, National Honor Society, is a representative in the Play Smart Program and a Stay-in-Bounds Program Ambassador.

He also participates in 4-H, is a Junior Rotarian and tutors.
