"Cosmic Consciousness and Christian Commitment" will examine how the universe, Earth and Christian stories are inter-related and integrated.

Program presenter will be Sister Mary Ellen Sheehan. She is a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Congregation, in Monroe, MI, and holds a doctorate in theology from Catholic University of Louvain, in Belgium.

Pathfinder Kids Kampus is holding a Summer Kamp for children ages 5-12 now through Aug. 12. The session includes fun and educational activities, meals and snacks. It takes place at Kids Kampus from 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Pathfinder Kids Kampus has openings in its free Early Head Start program for children ages 18 months to 3 years. The program includes preparation for preschool and kindergarten as well as two to three home visits each month to help parents work on their child's development and family goals.

Three Huntington County law enforcement agencies handed out 179 seat belt tickets during the 17-day Click It or Ticket campaign, Huntington County Sheriff Terry Stoffel has announced.

In addition, police issued four child restraint citations during the period.

Click It or Ticket is a national seat belt enforcement campaign held annually over the Memorial Day period. Local law enforcement agencies participating in the campaign were the Huntington County Sheriff's Department, Huntington Police Department and Warren Police Department.

Pathfinder Services employee Prudence Shumm (center, holding picture) was presented with a check and framed picture on Wednesday, June 12, by Pathfinder Services. The check, in the amount of $3,063, was raised via a chili contest and silent auction to assist Shumm with cancer treatment. Clifford the Big Red Dog will visit Huntington City-Township Public Library on Thursday, June 20, at 2 p.m.

He will be on hand to celebrate the Summer Reading Club programs and the Scholastic Book Fair.

Children of all ages are invited to visit the library and meet Clifford, who will appear in the Children's Department.

He will also visit the Markle Branch of the library on Friday, June 21, at 2 p.m.

The Youth Services Bureau of Huntington County will host a car seat clinic on June 29, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Hier's Park show arena.

Certified car seat technicians will be on hand to inspect car seats and provide installation tips.

To participate, parents and caregivers must bring their child's car seat and the child to ensure the most accurate inspection.

A limited number of car seats will be given away on the day of the event, which will be held regardless of weather conditions.

Economics classes from Huntington North, taught by Kyle Daugherty, competed in the regional "J.A. Titan" competition this spring. The students run their own businesses and competed against 92 other schools in northeast Indiana.

Numerous Huntington County cancer survivors take part in the Survivors' Lap during the Relay for Life event held Saturday, June 8, and Sunday, June 9. The event, held at Kriegbaum Field, featured musical entertainment, games and a luminaria to honor those who had passed away.

Lincoln Elementary School recently awarded two Huntington North High School graduates the Heith Garner Memorial Scholarship.

This year's recipients are Belle Kreider and Lizzie Parker, both former students at Lincoln School. Both plan to attend Huntington University in the fall.

Kreider, the daughter of Jody Kreider and the late David Kreider, plans to pursue a career in youth ministry.

At HNHS, she participated in peer tutoring, was an office helper and was active with The Campus newspaper. She also serves as a youth minister at The Awakening Community Church.

Huntington University recently named two local students as winners of awards for their academic achievements.

Senior Andrew Wickersham was awarded the S.G. Whittle Johnston Memorial Award.

Senior Josh McIntyre received the Jack P. Barlow Sr. History Book Prize.

Wickersham is a senior history major from Huntington. The title of his paper is "Weimar Bavaria: Radicals and Reactionaries," which he wrote under the direction of Dr. Paul Michelson for his course "Modern Totalitarianism: Stalin and Hitler."

Wickersham received a plaque and a cash award of $1,000.

The annual flower show will be held during the Salamonie Summer Festival in Warren.

Entries are sought for the theme category of "Hometown Memories."

Awards will be given to best of show, and first and second places.

Youth and adults will participate in the same class.

Diana Sowers, a fifth grade teacher at Roanoke Elementary School, has been named 2013 teacher of the year by the Huntington County Community School Corporation.

Sowers has 27 years of teaching experience, all with the Huntington County Community Schools. She holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Education from Indiana University, Fort Wayne.

Sowers was named Roanoke School's teacher of the year in both 2008 and 2013. She was also named American Legion Educator of the Year in 2008 and American Legion Auxiliary Educator of the Year in 2009.

Among them were Huntington students Zachary Goetz and Levi Lawson.

Goetz is a sophomore majoring in arts and sciences foundations.

Lawson is a freshman majoring in sport management.

The store, which originally opened in 2004, re-opened on April 11.

The store's focus is antique furniture, but storeowner Teresa Plasterer says the shop has added a new line of handmade rustic goods, such as burlap, jewelry and a wedding line.

She says the store closed as the economy slowed in recent years, but things have recovered and she has been "pleasantly surprised" with the business return so far.

The Volunteer Lawyer Program of Northeast Indiana honored six Fort Wayne law firms and 44 individual attorneys at its annual volunteer attorney awards ceremony on May 31.

Roth was named attorney of the year for accepting four VLP cases and donating 52 pro bono hours.

Rosemary Wagner, RN, is the new director of the Huntington County Free Clinic.

Wagner succeeds Sharon Kay, who retired this spring after working with the clinic since its founding in 2004.

Wagner currently lives in Wabash but is a former Huntington resident. She is a graduate of the former Lutheran College of Health Professions, Fort Wayne.

She most recently served as a regional consultant for a long-term care company.

Huntington University students, faculty and staff contributed more than 8,440 volunteer hours this year in the greater Huntington and Fort Wayne communities.

"We do everything from more than hundreds of hours served on missions trips to those who have donated an hour of their time for the blood drive," said Grace McBrayer, director of HU's volunteer service and outreach ministry. "And we know we are beyond what we have recorded in numbers of volunteers and the amount of hours served."

The Roanoke Antiques and Art Fair will return to the town's downtown area on Saturday, June 15, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The street will be closed to accommodate more than 30 antiques dealers.

Visitors will also be able to purchase ice cream, desserts and drinks or dine al fresco for breakfast and lunch.

The day also features live entertainment starting at noon by the Roanoke Rounders, bringing bluegrass and old-time music to the streets of Roanoke.

Cancer Services for Huntington County will be holding its sixth annual B-K Root Beer Stand Fund-Raiser on Monday, June 17.

B-K is donating $1 for each order that day to Cancer Services.

This year, the event will also include a cookie bake sale.

Funds from Cancer Services are used to help those battling cancer in Huntington County, with mileage costs for traveling back and forth to treatment and prescription costs for cancer medication not covered by insurance.

Applications are being accepted for the Steve and Peggy Paul Memorial scholarships.

The American Red Cross of Huntington County announces two local upcoming blood drives.

On June 17, from 2 to 7 p.m., a blood drive will be held at the Evangelical United Methodist Church, in the main room. This is the Fallen Officer blood drive.

"Yankee Lady," the Yankee Air Museum's (YAM) meticulously restored World War II B-17, will be on display at the Huntington Municipal Airport, June 21 to 23.

The Willow Run, Ypsilanti, MI, based, four-engine heavy bomber will take part in Huntington Heritage Days opening on June 19.

The last time the aircraft, a Boeing B-17, visited the airport was in 2009.

The event is sponsored by Mayor Brooks Fetters, the Huntington Fire Department, City Services Department, Huntington City Police Department and Water and Water Pollution Control departments.

The Huntington County Soil and Water Conservation District has funding available through a Clean Water Indiana Grant for landowners who have property in the Salamonie River Watershed area.

Landowners can receive an incentive payment for installation of conservation practices.

This incentive is being offered to landowners to install various conservation practices that will help reduce nutrients and sediments from entering our rivers and streams.

Pathfinder Kids Kampus is accepting enrollment for summer and fall programs and will be offering the following programs this summer and fall:

• Summer Kamp is a program designed for children ages 5 to 12 to have fun and educational learning all summer long and will take place Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m, through Aug. 12.

• Fall Preschool is a program designed for children ages 3, 4, and 5 years. Two, three and five-day preschool classes are available and will begin on Sept. 3.

The Huntington Erie Community Band will open its 98th season on Wednesday, June 12, with a concert in the auditorium at Huntington North High School at 7:30 p.m.
The band has not played a concert there since the celebration of its 75th season.

Entrance to the school should be made via the fieldhouse/auditorium entrance on the east side of the school.

In honor of Flag Day, the concert will feature patriotic music and other examples of musical Americana.

Thaine Campbell will lead the band.

Trying to fill what he sees as a need in the area and do so at affordable prices, Robert Coolman recently opened Coolman's Computer Service in Warren.

When Coolman was looking for a job after a 15-year stint with a company in Bluffton, his sister-in-law suggested Warren as a place to set up a computer business because there wasn't one in town, and Coolman decided to take the suggestion, he says.

The business is located at 223 N. Wayne St., next to D&D Bikes.

Coolman's sells and services laptops and desktops, always with an eye toward affordability, he notes.

Paul Tellef, real estate broker and auctioneer, has completed a 15-hour Supervisory Appraiser Training course.
This course is required by the Indiana Real Estate Appraiser Licensure and Certification Board for those appraisers who intend to have trainee appraisers working with them.

Tellef is a certified resident real estate appraiser and also holds licenses to act as a broker or auctioneer.

He currently specializes in residential real estate appraisals and has served Huntington County for over 30 years.

Each member of the Psi Iota Xi Sorority - Phi Chapter recently brought books to their meeting to be donated to Pathfinder Kids Kampus Early Head Start program.  The program provides free childcare from ages 0-3 years of age for low -income families. Randy Warner has accepted a position as a Certified Public Accountant at Terry Reckard CPA in Huntington.

Warner, a Huntington native, is a graduate of Huntington North High School and Indiana University. He worked for Ernst & Young in Indianapolis from 1991 to 1998 and Ernst & Young in Fort Wayne from 1998 to 2013 before coming to Huntington.

Frederick's Photography in Huntington has donated four record boards for use at Crestview Middle School. The boards will be used to display track and field records. Huntington native Matthew Gargiulo graduated from Olivet Nazarene University (ONU), in Bourbonnais, IL, on May 4.

Gargiulo earned a Bachelor of Science in elementary education.

The computer system that the state uses to sell Indiana hunting and fishing licenses will shut down from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, for maintenance.

People will be unable to buy hunting or fishing licenses on this day. The shutdown affects all forms of license sales, including authorized license retailers and online purchasing through the DNR website.

Anyone in need of a license for that day is encouraged to buy one in advance.

The LaFontaine Arts Council (LAC) honored three Huntington Catholic eighth graders as Artists of the Month in May.

Joshua Bowers, son of Jill Bowers and Scott Bowers of Huntington, was nominated by Jan Tharp, his art teacher. According to Tharp, "Josh is very creative and excellent at problem solving and going the extra mile. He is dedicated and strives to set high standards in his art work."

Bowers plans to attend Bishop Luers next year.

Victory Noll Center is offering two extended programs that will study Christian spirituality.

"Foundations of Christian Spirituality," is a year-long reflective study of the Wisdom Tradition over the centuries. In the second program, "Spiritual Direction Program and Practicum," participants will engage in a two-year formation to prepare them to become spiritual directors.

Hope Christian School will host an informational meeting on June 27, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., for those who are interested in learning more about the school, which is scheduled to open in the fall of 2014.

The informational meeting will take place at Café of Hope, 900 E. State St., Huntington.

In his role as president of the Northeast Indiana Local Economic Development Organization Council, Mark Wickersham, executive director, is participating in the Cincinnati Regional Exchange this week alongside other area leaders in business, education and community service.

This month's "Wild Wednesday" movie for Seniors is "We Bought a Zoo," on June 19, at Huntington 7 Theater.

This year's festival features a live art auction.

Three area artists, Cheryl Alevizon, Cherie Droege and Curtis Jarrett, donated paintings on 16x20-inch canvases. These works will be unveiled the evening of JeFFFest and will be auctioned off by Steve Ness of Ness Brothers Real Estate and Auction Company.

Northview Church of Christ will be holding a weeklong vacation Bible school titled, "Kingdom Rocks: Where Kids Stand Strong for God," from June 10 to 14.

Kingdom Rocks is for youth ages 3 to grade six and will run from 6 to 8:30 p.m. each day.

Youth will participate in memorable Bible-learning activities, singing songs, playing teamwork-building games, experiencing Bible adventures and testing out Science-Fun Gizmos.

Also, participants will learn to look for evidence of God around them via "God sighting."

Local law enforcement officers, firefighters and other emergency personnel will sponsor a summer day camp for youth ages 8-13.

Camp H.E.R.O. (Honor, Excellence, Respect, Opportunity) will be held July 15-21 at Crestview Middle School. Sessions will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., although participants may arrive as early as 7 a.m.

The week will include one overnight stay at Crestview with entertainment by local comedian David Dean.

Ten Huntington County students have been awarded $1,500 in H.E.L.P. Inc. for Disabled Citizens scholarships for the upcoming school year. One student has been awarded $750 for her final semester.

Colin McIntire and Zachery Shearer each received the John Decker Memorial Scholarship in memory of Board Member John Decker. This scholarship is awarded to a student enrolled in post-high school studies who has a qualifying disability.

Jessica Williams, a 2009 graduate of Huntington North High School, graduated with distinction from the Indiana University School of Journalism on May 4.

Williams, the daughter of Jan and Jerry Williams, of Huntington, earned a Bachelor of Arts in journalism with a specialization in news reporting and writing and also minored in history and political science.

She currently resides in Bluffton, where she is employed at the News-Banner.

The Markle United Methodist Church will hold a community block party and ice cream social on Saturday, June 8, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the church parking lot.

The American Legion Post 7 fireworks committee will hold its final fund-raiser before the July 4 show this Saturday, June 8.

Roadblocks will be held at Jefferson and MacGahan streets, Cherry and Market streets and Jefferson Street and Etna Avenue from 9 a.m. to noon.

Currently the fireworks committee is $3,000 below its budget for the show and is looking for help from the community. The July 4 show is totally funded by the donations of the businesses, organizations and the community and they need the public's help.

Young started working for the company in April of 1988.

A recognition party was held at the plant and Young received a gift from the president in honor of her years of dedicated service.

Huntington City-Township Public Library and Huntington Area Master Gardeners will present a Father's Day make and take gardening craft workshop on Saturday, June 8, at the main library.

Youth ages 4 years through fifth grade are invited to decorate a flowerpot and listen to a gardening story, then fill their decorated pot with gardening soil and a plant to give away for Father's Day.

This workshop is free of charge, but space is limited and registration is required to attend.

LifeStream Services, in Yorktown, and Aging & In-Home Services of Northeast Indiana, in Fort Wayne, are now offering a new program to help qualifying Medicare beneficiaries transition from the hospital to home-based care.

The new program, Care Transitions of Eastern Indiana, covers 22 counties, including Huntington County.
