 Photos provided. Huntington's Tri Kappa sorority recently awarded four general scholarships and the Laura Blackburn Memorial Scholarship to Huntington North High School seniors.
General scholarship recipients were Zach Shearer, Josie Eckert, Olivia Ely and Lauren Daas. Each received a $500 scholarship.
The $1,000 Laura Blackburn Memorial Scholarship went to Ana Wenning.
Shearer plans to attend Ivy Tech or Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne to pursue a degree in business managment/ entrepreneurship.

The Cancer Support Group will meet Monday, June 17, at the Trinity United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. in the lower level.
The group will be showing the second part of the movie "Forks Over Knives," a documentary featuring Dr. T. Colin Campbell and Dr. Caldwell Esselsstyn.
There will also be testimonies and health news shared.
Anyone interested in alternative means to health is encouraged to attend.

Hannah Nissley has been named champion tweeter by the Huntington City-Township Public Library. As part of the library's Teen Tech Week, students in grades six through 12 were invited to tweet the plot of "Little Red Riding Hood" in 140 characters. Nissley won the contest with this tweet: "There was a girl who wore a red hood. She went to her grandma's There was a wolf. He tried to eat her. Woodsman killed him."

The Shepherd's Food Pantry in Andrews will hold its next food distribution on Thursday, June 20.
Boxes of food will be available for Andrews-area residents from 10 a.m. to noon, at the Old Union Building, behind the Andrews Town Hall, 67 N. Snowden St.
No appointment is necessary; boxes will be distributed on a first come-first serve basis.

Replacement of a culvers is scheduled to close Ind.-105, between CR 500S and CR 250S, beginning today, June 17, through Wednesday, June 19, weather permitting.
Beginning Wednesday, July 19, construction will slow traffic on, but not close, Ind.-105 at the Salamonie River bridge.

Cherry is studying nursing at IWU, where she just completed her freshman year. She is a volunteer at the VA Medical Center. She graduated from Huntington North High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society, earned an academic letter and was in the top 25 of her class for three years.

Abby won first place with a 43-inch-tall stack of books, and Emily placed second with a stack of books measuring 42.75 inches tall. The contest, held as part of National Library Week, required participants to put one hand behind their backs and stack as many books as possible in three minutes.

Christ the King Episcopal Church will host its annual Lunch on the Lawn during the Heritage Days parade on Saturday, June 22.
Hamburgers, hot dogs, Coney dogs and pop may be purchased.
Bottled water will be given away, and the church will be open for those who need to cool off.
The church is located at 1224 N. Jefferson St., Huntington.

 Photo by Andre B. Laird. Owners Joel Froomkin and Rich Najuch have reopened ThEatery in downtown Huntington as an Italian bistro. Chef Jim Houser says the establishment re-opened for business on May 28.
"I approached Rich and Joel about re-opening the restaurant," Houser says. "I saw how it worked with the Supper Club and was one of the people instrumental in convincing them to re-open."
He adds that Huntington lacks a classical Italian bistro and ThEatery fills that void.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces that Ind.-5 at CR 500N, between U.S.-24 and Ind.-16, north of Huntington, is closed to accommodate replacement of a small structure over Clear Creek.
The detour is U.S.-24 to Ind.-9 to Ind.-114 to Ind.-5.
The road is expected to re-open in late July, weather permitting.
The contract for the project was awarded to Brooks Construction, based on the low bid of $599,000.

Huntington City-Township Public Library will host a Scholastic Book Fair from June 17-21 in the Children's Program Room.
The book fair will be open Monday to Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Friday 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The fair offers books from over 150 publishers. Offerings will include fiction and non-fiction books for kids ages birth to 18 years, including popular series, activity and science books, and crafts, as well as a selection of books for parents and adults.

The Honeywell Center in Wabash has announced winners of the 2013 Clark Gallery themed art competition.
The sixth annual competition, sponsored by Nancy J's Fabrics and Heaven on Earth, features "Quilts" as its theme and accepted art in any medium that represented that subject. Artwork for the competition is on display now through July 10.
Cherie Droege, of Roanoke, was a local award winner. In all, 43 artists entered 78 pieces for the competition, of which judge Ejenobo Oke selected 42 pieces to go on exhibit.

The Andrews-Dallas Township Public Library invites the public to share great food and recipes at the Recipe Club.
The next meeting will be held at the library on Tuesday, June 18, at 6 p.m.
The month's theme is casseroles.
Attendees are asked to bring a copy of their favorite casserole recipe and a sample to share.
Drinks and copies of the recipes will be provided by the library.

Victory Noll Center will host a retreat program on July 13 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
"Cosmic Consciousness and Christian Commitment" will examine how the universe, Earth and Christian stories are inter-related and integrated.
Program presenter will be Sister Mary Ellen Sheehan. She is a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Congregation, in Monroe, MI, and holds a doctorate in theology from Catholic University of Louvain, in Belgium.

Pathfinder Kids Kampus is holding a Summer Kamp for children ages 5-12 now through Aug. 12. The session includes fun and educational activities, meals and snacks. It takes place at Kids Kampus from 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Pathfinder Kids Kampus has openings in its free Early Head Start program for children ages 18 months to 3 years. The program includes preparation for preschool and kindergarten as well as two to three home visits each month to help parents work on their child's development and family goals.

Three Huntington County law enforcement agencies handed out 179 seat belt tickets during the 17-day Click It or Ticket campaign, Huntington County Sheriff Terry Stoffel has announced.
In addition, police issued four child restraint citations during the period.
Click It or Ticket is a national seat belt enforcement campaign held annually over the Memorial Day period. Local law enforcement agencies participating in the campaign were the Huntington County Sheriff's Department, Huntington Police Department and Warren Police Department.

Clifford the Big Red Dog will visit Huntington City-Township Public Library on Thursday, June 20, at 2 p.m.
He will be on hand to celebrate the Summer Reading Club programs and the Scholastic Book Fair.
Children of all ages are invited to visit the library and meet Clifford, who will appear in the Children's Department.
He will also visit the Markle Branch of the library on Friday, June 21, at 2 p.m.

The Youth Services Bureau of Huntington County will host a car seat clinic on June 29, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Hier's Park show arena.
Certified car seat technicians will be on hand to inspect car seats and provide installation tips.
To participate, parents and caregivers must bring their child's car seat and the child to ensure the most accurate inspection.
A limited number of car seats will be given away on the day of the event, which will be held regardless of weather conditions.

 Photo provided. A two-man team from Huntington North High School placed third in a regional Junior Achievement tournament, qualifying the pair to move on to the national competition. HNHS students Taylor Boxell and Jason Ervin placed 20th out of 34 teams in the national tournament.
Economics classes from Huntington North, taught by Kyle Daugherty, competed in the regional "J.A. Titan" competition this spring. The students run their own businesses and competed against 92 other schools in northeast Indiana.

This year's recipients are Belle Kreider and Lizzie Parker, both former students at Lincoln School. Both plan to attend Huntington University in the fall.
Kreider, the daughter of Jody Kreider and the late David Kreider, plans to pursue a career in youth ministry.
At HNHS, she participated in peer tutoring, was an office helper and was active with The Campus newspaper. She also serves as a youth minister at The Awakening Community Church.

Huntington University recently named two local students as winners of awards for their academic achievements.
Senior Andrew Wickersham was awarded the S.G. Whittle Johnston Memorial Award.
Senior Josh McIntyre received the Jack P. Barlow Sr. History Book Prize.
Wickersham is a senior history major from Huntington. The title of his paper is "Weimar Bavaria: Radicals and Reactionaries," which he wrote under the direction of Dr. Paul Michelson for his course "Modern Totalitarianism: Stalin and Hitler."
Wickersham received a plaque and a cash award of $1,000.

The annual flower show will be held during the Salamonie Summer Festival in Warren.
Entries are sought for the theme category of "Hometown Memories."
Awards will be given to best of show, and first and second places.
Youth and adults will participate in the same class.
All entries must be turned in by June 21.

Sowers has 27 years of teaching experience, all with the Huntington County Community Schools. She holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Education from Indiana University, Fort Wayne.
Sowers was named Roanoke School's teacher of the year in both 2008 and 2013. She was also named American Legion Educator of the Year in 2008 and American Legion Auxiliary Educator of the Year in 2009.

Trine University recently announced its list of students named to the dean's list for the spring 2013 semester.
Among them were Huntington students Zachary Goetz and Levi Lawson.
Goetz is a sophomore majoring in arts and sciences foundations.
Lawson is a freshman majoring in sport management.
Criteria for being named to the dean's list include earning a semester grade-point average between 3.5 and 3.749 on a four-point scale and carrying a minimum of 15 credits.

They include:
Summer Reading Program This summer's overall theme is "Dig Into Reading!" The program is further divided into age groups with each having its own theme, format and requirements for earning prizes. Patrons of all ages can come into the library and participate in summer reading programs.

New Life Fellowship will hold vacation Bible school June 24-28, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. each night.
"Face Your Fears at Colossal Coaster World" will include Bible stories about Paul, crafts, music and games.
To kick off the VBS, the church is hosting a Community Block Party on June 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. The event will feature games, prizes, rides and a jump house and is open to the community.
The week-long vacation Bible school will end with a cookout for youth and their families.

Plasterer's Antiques & Things has re-opened its doors.
The store, which originally opened in 2004, re-opened on April 11.
It is open on Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The store's focus is antique furniture, but storeowner Teresa Plasterer says the shop has added a new line of handmade rustic goods, such as burlap, jewelry and a wedding line.
She says the store closed as the economy slowed in recent years, but things have recovered and she has been "pleasantly surprised" with the business return so far.

American Legion Post 85 in Huntington will host a fund-raiser to benefit Annie Rakoczy-Keyser.
The benefit will be held on Saturday, June 15, at noon.
Nelson's Chicken will be served until 4 p.m.
An auction will be held at 2 p.m. At 7 p.m., the band Live Wire will perform.
Throughout the day, a bake sale will also be held.
The event is open to the public.

The Volunteer Lawyer Program of Northeast Indiana honored six Fort Wayne law firms and 44 individual attorneys at its annual volunteer attorney awards ceremony on May 31.
Listed among the individual attorneys was Mathew Roth, from DeLaney, Hartburg, Roth and Garrott, of Huntington.
Roth was named attorney of the year for accepting four VLP cases and donating 52 pro bono hours.

The Salamonie Summer Festival will host a Body Art Contest. Contestants will enter their favorite tattoo, which will be photographed by a professional photographer.
All photos will be displayed, and monetary voting will decide a winner.
Awards will go to the three entrants that receive the most votes.

Gems & Jams 2013, a fund-raiser for the Free Diabetic Clinic, in Huntington, will be held on Saturday, June 15, at Heritage Hall, Hier's Park.
The event begins with an auction and meal at 2 p.m. Bands, including Joni Killian & Co., will perform beginning at 6 p.m.

Huntington University students, faculty and staff contributed more than 8,440 volunteer hours this year in the greater Huntington and Fort Wayne communities.
"We do everything from more than hundreds of hours served on missions trips to those who have donated an hour of their time for the blood drive," said Grace McBrayer, director of HU's volunteer service and outreach ministry. "And we know we are beyond what we have recorded in numbers of volunteers and the amount of hours served."

Cancer Services for Huntington County will be holding its sixth annual B-K Root Beer Stand Fund-Raiser on Monday, June 17.
B-K is donating $1 for each order that day to Cancer Services.
This year, the event will also include a cookie bake sale.
Funds from Cancer Services are used to help those battling cancer in Huntington County, with mileage costs for traveling back and forth to treatment and prescription costs for cancer medication not covered by insurance.

The Huntington County Soil and Water Conservation District has funding available through a Clean Water Indiana Grant for landowners who have property in the Salamonie River Watershed area.
Landowners can receive an incentive payment for installation of conservation practices.
This incentive is being offered to landowners to install various conservation practices that will help reduce nutrients and sediments from entering our rivers and streams.

The Huntington Erie Community Band will open its 98th season on Wednesday, June 12, with a concert in the auditorium at Huntington North High School at 7:30 p.m. The band has not played a concert there since the celebration of its 75th season.
Entrance to the school should be made via the fieldhouse/auditorium entrance on the east side of the school.
In honor of Flag Day, the concert will feature patriotic music and other examples of musical Americana.
Thaine Campbell will lead the band.

When Coolman was looking for a job after a 15-year stint with a company in Bluffton, his sister-in-law suggested Warren as a place to set up a computer business because there wasn't one in town, and Coolman decided to take the suggestion, he says.

Coolman's sells and services laptops and desktops, always with an eye toward affordability, he notes.

The computer system that the state uses to sell Indiana hunting and fishing licenses will shut down from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, for maintenance.
People will be unable to buy hunting or fishing licenses on this day. The shutdown affects all forms of license sales, including authorized license retailers and online purchasing through the DNR website.
Anyone in need of a license for that day is encouraged to buy one in advance.

Camp H.E.R.O. (Honor, Excellence, Respect, Opportunity) will be held July 15-21 at Crestview Middle School. Sessions will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., although participants may arrive as early as 7 a.m.
The week will include one overnight stay at Crestview with entertainment by local comedian David Dean.

Colin McIntire and Zachery Shearer each received the John Decker Memorial Scholarship in memory of Board Member John Decker. This scholarship is awarded to a student enrolled in post-high school studies who has a qualifying disability.

The American Legion Post 7 fireworks committee will hold its final fund-raiser before the July 4 show this Saturday, June 8.
Roadblocks will be held at Jefferson and MacGahan streets, Cherry and Market streets and Jefferson Street and Etna Avenue from 9 a.m. to noon.
Currently the fireworks committee is $3,000 below its budget for the show and is looking for help from the community. The July 4 show is totally funded by the donations of the businesses, organizations and the community and they need the public's help.

Huntington City-Township Public Library and Huntington Area Master Gardeners will present a Father's Day make and take gardening craft workshop on Saturday, June 8, at the main library.
Youth ages 4 years through fifth grade are invited to decorate a flowerpot and listen to a gardening story, then fill their decorated pot with gardening soil and a plant to give away for Father's Day.
This workshop is free of charge, but space is limited and registration is required to attend.

A meal prepared by Parkview Catering was served by the Parkview Huntington Hospital leadership team.
Volunteers were recognized for their service to the hospital, which in 2012 included 156 individuals who provided a total of 22,260 hours of service.
Special recognition and 25-year pins were presented to Opal Poe and Ethel Maples.
Both retired in 2012 after co-managing the PHH Gift Shop for many years.

Salamonie Lake will host free campground programs each second Saturday of June, July and August.
The programs will be presented by naturalists from Upper Wabash Interpretive Services.
"Creatures of the Wild" will be on Saturday, June 8, at 7:30 p.m., at the campground shelter area. Participants can meet live animals and learn what makes them special.
Participants are encouraged to bring cameras.
On July 13, the program will be "Beach Field Day." Field day activities and games will begin at 1 p.m.

She has been nominated the Inspirational Country Music Awards female vocalist of the year in Nashville, TN, three years in a row and won the award in 2011.

Faith Chapel United Methodist Church will host vacation Bible school from June 23, through June 27, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. each evening.
The theme for vacation Bible school is SonRise National Park. The church will transform into a national park and the program is open to youth 3 years old to youth entering fifth grade this fall.
Activities include story time, crafts, games and songs. A light dinner will be served each night.
The closing program will start at 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 27. Light refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the program.

Entries are now being accepted for the open class adult exhibit to be held during the Huntington County 4-H Fair in July.
The exhibits, sponsored by the Huntington County Extension Homemakers, are open to any resident of Huntington County 18 years and older or any member of a Huntington County Extension Homemakers club.
The exhibits are open to amateurs only. Professionals are defined as those receiving $1,200 or more per year in a specific category.
Each exhibitor may enter one item per division. All items must have been completed after Aug. 1, 2012.

When Benjamin James Radosevich was born on May 9, 2013, it completed five generations on his mother's side of the family. The Congregational Christian Church, in North Manchester, has announced new times for its services.
Services are now being held at 8:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. on Sundays in the sanctuary. A hospitality time is offered throughout the morning and after the last service. Sunday school for adults, teens and children begins at 9:45 a.m.

Brubaker completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.
Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Brubaker is the son of Kevin and Lisa Brubaker, of Huntington.

Davisson's art depicts a portrait of Chief Little Turtle against a backdrop of the state of Indiana and the forks of the Wabash River. He says he was inspired to create the work after observing the Wabash River and imagining the Native Americans who fought in the area.

Paula Rowe, Rita Rorick and Sara Baker all shared in caring for Renee Keller, who was Rowe's sister-in-law, Rorick's sister and Baker's aunt; and for Phil Rowe, who was Rowe's husband, Rorick's brother and Baker's father. Rorick herself is a breast cancer survivor, and the three women say they were motivated by Keller to become involved in the event.

The Youth Services Bureau's Making A Difference (MAD) camp is now open for registration.
This year's theme is "Back to Nature." Campers will learn about nature and how to preserve the environment.
"The campers will realize they are a vital part of the big picture with responsibilities to themselves and others," says Karen Street, camp coordinator.
The camp will offer crafts, group activities, snacks, games and projects daily.
It will run Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon, with the following schedule:

Boy Scout Troop 33 is partnering with A.C.E. Recycling to offer a free electronics recycling event on June 15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 10700 Aboite Center Rd., Fort Wayne.
Items accepted at the event include, but are not limited to, laptops, flat panels, cell phones, computers, keyboard, fax machines, copiers, VCRs, stereos, cameras, gaming consoles, servers and hard drives.

Preschool-age children and their adults are invited to Salamonie Preschool "Fishing Fun" on June 12 at Salamonie Lake.
The Salamonie preschool class will meet from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Salamonie Interpretive Center, in Andrews.
Each program is designed to enhance the preschooler's basic education and includes learning the alphabet, building a craft, social interaction and time spent outdoors, always with a nature-related theme.

People age 50 and older are invited to the monthly Senior Monday carry-in luncheon today, June 3, at Salamonie Interpretive Center in Lost Bridge West State Recreation Area, in Andrews.
The luncheon starts at noon. After the meal, participants can enjoy a presentation by David Pritchard about fly-fishing and making his own flies and rods.
Attendees should bring their table service, a prepared dish to share and a donation to help defray costs of the provided main dish.

The Huntington County Master Gardeners will sponsor a program on hybridizing on Thursday, June 6, at 7 p.m. in Heritage Hall, Hier's Park, Huntington.
Master Gardener Betty Wallace will discuss hybridizing for the hobbyist, explaining how new varieties of plants can be created from established plants.
She will use daylilies, iris and hibiscus as examples. Focusing on tomatoes, she will provide examples and definitions of hybrids, heirlooms, F1s and open pollination, so that gardeners can interpret the label when buying plants.

Central Christian Church in Huntington will be conducting a sock drive to benefit youth preschool through high school in the community.
The church is attempting to collect 1,800 pairs of socks and has collaborated with another local church that will be holding a shoe drive to collect 600 pairs of shoes.
The goal is to collect all the socks by July 1 so they can be handed out prior to the start of the new school year.
Donations of new socks or money to purchase socks are being accepted. Sock sizes preschool through adult are acceptable in all different colors.

The guest speaker will be Julie DuVall, who will appear as Mary Ann Bickerdyke, who was part of the nursing corps during the Civil War period.
Bickerdyke, who was born in Ohio in 1817, worked to improve conditions for wounded soldiers during the Civil War. She eventually built more than 300 field hospitals and became known as "Mother" Bickerdyke.

Entries are being accepted for the quilt show and the art show to be held during the Salamonie Summer Festival, in Warren.
Both shows will be held July 5-7.
Quilts of all sizes and types, including hand quilted, machine quilted, applique and antique, will be accepted for the quilt show. Wall hangings, quilted wearables and other quilted items will also be accepted. All items must have sleeves for hanging purposes.

Hoffman, a 2011 graduate of Huntington North High School, is majoring in international business. He is the son of Lana and Andy Hoffman.
Hoffman has spent approximately 1,500 hours doing mission work in the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Chicago.

Hiner, a graduating senior at Huntington North High School, is undecided on a major. She is the daughter of Lisa and Robert Hiner, of Roanoke.
During her high school career, Hiner has been involved in student and class councils, freshmen mentoring, Leading Leos, DEKA yearbook and is a National Honor Society member. She has also been involved in 4-H Junior Leaders and recreational softball.
