Woody Schnitz, of Huntington, couldn't wait to enlist in the Army during World War II.
So he didn't wait.
"My dad and Russ Birdsall's dad signed the papers for us to go in - at 17 years old," Schnitz says.
Schnitz attributes being able to skirt the military's age minimum of 18 years old to its policies not being strictly enforced in those days. His service spanned 1945 to 1947.

"Why don't we have it here?"
That's the question Emily Johnson, seventh-grader at Crestview Middle School, asked about the program Blessings in a Backpack after she saw it at work in Fort Wayne.
Johnson began attending Huntington County Community Schools when she entered middle school at Crestview. She had previously been attending Canterbury School in Fort Wayne, where she had volunteered with the program.
"At our school (Canterbury) we would have a day where we packed the backpacks," she says.

The expo will be held from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Merillat Complex fieldhouse on the Huntington University campus.
"We've got a good plan," says John Ulrich, assistant director of the Huntington County Council on Aging, which coordinates the expo. "People like it, so we try to recreate that experience every year."

Sherilyn Emberton, Dowden's successor, will add her own personal touches - a few probably reflective of her Texas heritage - to the office.
Dowden plans to stick around campus for a while, helping Emberton learn the ropes and attending a couple of events in June; then, he's going to enjoy some down time with his wife, Chris, and their grandchildren.

When Lindsie Goss showed up for her first day of work on Monday, May 6, she already had a full plate of things to get done.

On Friday, April 26, Huntington North and South Adams High School teamed up for the second annual Northeast Indiana High School Machining Challenge - and representatives of 18 area employers showed up to scout for potential recruits.

A change in location and more square footage has given the Roanoke Public Library a new look and much more potential.
