Rain, Lady Spartans can't keep HNHS from softball sectional final

After rain attempted to spoil the game for the Huntington North High School varsity softball team, host Homestead did the same, cutting into the Lady Vikings' lead, but Huntington North weathered both storms to win 7-2 on Wednesday, May 22, advancing to the title game of the Homestead Softball Sectional.

 

HU runners Wood, Ogle set to compete at NAIA national meet

Huntington University track and field team members Lance Wood and Cendall Ogle will represent the school at the 2013 NAIA Outdoor National Championships slated for May 23-25 at Indiana Wesleyan University.

Wood will be making his first appearance on the national stage in the marathon as the 64th seed scheduled for Saturday, May 25, at 6 a.m. The senior punched his ticket to the championships by running a 1:14:29.72 at the Veterans Half Marathon in Columbia City on Nov. 10, 2012.

 

Lady Vikings top Jay County in sectional opener behind Rethlake

Erin Rethlake struck out 19 batters and hit a first inning home run to lead the Huntington North High School varsity softball team past Jay County, 5-1, Tuesday, May 21, in the opening round of the Homestead Softball Sectional.

The Lady Vikings, 22-2, will face Homestead this afternoon, Wednesday, May 22, at 5. Homestead beat New Haven 8-5, on Tuesday.

Three field events competitors were the only Lady Vikings to qualify for the state track meet at the Fort Wayne Northrop Girls Track Regional on Tuesday, May 21.

Senior Alexis Wygant in pole vault and juniors Maddie Klender and Lindsey Foster in shot put and long jump, respectively, will be waving the HNHS banner at the state championships on Saturday, June 1, at Indiana University.

CMS boys' track teams finish eighth at NELMSC meet

The Crestview Middle School boys' sixth and seventh grade track and field team came in eighth place at the Northeast Lakes Middle School Conference track and field meet on Tuesday, May 14.

Jordan Yohe's third place finishes in the 400-meter dash and high jump highlighted the Cougars' day.

The boys' eighth grade track and field team also finished eighth at the meet.

A third place finish came from the 1,600-meter relay team of Josh Wiles, Dawson Hertel, Matt Guhl and Dillon Valenti, who broke the old school record in the race with a clocking of 4:05.58.

 

CMS 6-7 girls' track team seventh at conference

The Crestview Middle School girls' sixth and seventh grade track and field team placed seventh at the Northeast Lakes Middle School Conference track and field meet on Tuesday, May 14, with 32.5 points.

The Lady Cougars' lone top-three finish on the day came from Karmen Koch, who took second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of :18.31.

 

 

Anderson double-dips Vikings in regular season finale

The Huntington North High School varsity baseball team suffered a doubleheader loss to host Anderson, 6-2, 3-2, in its regular season finale on Saturday, May 18.

In the second game, the Indians ended a scoreless tie by plating one in the top of the fourth. Although the Vikings responded with two of their own in the fifth to wrest the lead, Anderson snatched the advantage right back in the sixth with a pair of scores, taking the game to its final tally.

 

HNHS girls' tennis teams nets sectional crown

The Huntington North High School girls' varsity tennis team topped Adams Central 3-2 to win the Norwell Girls' Tennis Sectional on Friday, May 17.

The Lady Vikings, 9-7, defeated the host Knights the day before, also by a score of 3-2, to face the Flying Jets for the sectional title.

 

Rethlake throws no-hitter, hits 1 of 3 HN dingers as Lady Vikes win

Erin Rethlake pitched a no-hitter and hit one of three Lady Viking home runs as the Huntington North High School varsity softball team roughed up visiting Columbia City, 11-0, on Thursday, May 16.

Rethlake hit her 12th homer of the season, Makayla Whaley got her first and Kaylynn Rosen hit her third during an 11-run fourth inning explosion.

Meanwhile, on the mound, Rethlake tied thee bats of all 15 batters she faced in the five inning game, recording nine strikeouts with a walk as the Lady Vikings improved to 21-2 on the season.

 

EN tops JV softball squad

The Huntington North High School junior varsity softball team was beaten by visiting East Noble, 12-7, on Thursday, May 16.

Monica Minton and Alysse Omillion led the offense for Huntington North, 10-5, with two hits apiece.

Alexandra Kreider took the mound loss, yielding 11 hits, with six strikeouts and no walks.

 

 

Rentschler, Mettler both qualify twice for boys’ track regional

Senior Jon Rentschler and junior Charles Mettler each qualified twice for regional competition by placing in the top four in their events at the Fort Wayne Wayne Track and Field Sectional on Thursday, May 16.

Rentschler placed second in the discus with a throw of 140-7 and third in the shot put with a heave of 48-11, while Mettler was runner-up in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:37.55 and third in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:10.79.

 

HNHS tops Homestead, 6-0

Drew Schnitz, Mitch Hughes and Derek Snyder all had three hits and Matt Hogan pitched a shutout to lead the Huntington North High School varsity baseball team to a 6-0 win over host Homestead on Thursday, May 16.

Snyder and Devon Goelz each knocked in a pair of runs for the Vikings, 16-7, to support the five-hit pitching of Hogan, 2-0.

The Vikings turned a scoreless game into a 3-0 advantage in the fourth inning, then scored two more runs in the sixth and one more run in the seventh.

HNHS had 15 hits in the game.

 

Viking golfers drub North Side

All four Huntington North High School boys' varsity golf team scorers went sub-40 as the Vikings drubbed host Fort Wayne North Side, 146-196, at McMillen Park Golf Course.

Zac Tackett earned medalist honors on the day with a 35, edging teammates Grant Meese and Dakota Wibel by one stroke. Sebastian Eckert was the final scorer with a 39.

Nick Ferguson was the top golfer for North, firing a 40. Dustin Gregory followed with a 50 and Travis Good and Ben Streeter both shot rounds of 53.

The Huntington North High School girls' tennis team used a pair of singles wins and a three-set victory at second doubles to top Norwell, 3-2, at the Norwell Tennis Sectional on Thursday, May 16.

The Lady Vikings play Adams Central tonight, Friday, May 17, at 5 p.m. for the sectional championship.

The No. 2 doubles team of Ana Eckert and Emily Karst hung on for a 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 win and singles players Kylie Fredrick and Kari Bard dispatched their foes to move HNHS, 8-7, to the championship match.

 

Late rallies fall short as Lady Vikings lose to Kokomo

A pair of late rallies fell a run short as the Huntington North High School varsity softball team lost to host Kokomo, 7-6, on Wednesday, May 15, for just the second loss of the season.

The Lady Vikings, 20-2, rallied back from a 3-1 deficit in the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead on a Kaylynn Rosen three-run homer, but Kokomo struck for four runs in its half of the frame to take a 7-4 lead. The Lady Vikes then got two more runs in the sixth inning but couldn't push across the tying run.

 

Smith one-hitter leads Vikings past Kokomo

Quinton Smith pitched a one-hitter and knocked in two runs to lead the Huntington North High School varsity baseball team to a 10-0 romp over visiting Kokomo on Wednesday, May 15.

Smith gave up his only hit in the fifth inning with the Vikings, 15-7, already up 9-0. He struck out four and walked four.

The Vikes got the only runs they needed with a two-spot in the first. They tacked on four more runs in the third inning, got three in the fourth and the final run in the fifth.

Red Cross golf outing to be held June 8 at Norwood

The Huntington County Chapter of the American Red Cross will host the seventh annual Clara Barton Golf Classic on June 8 at Norwood Golf Club.

Registration starts at 7 a.m., with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.

The entry fee includes greens fees, cart, driving range and luncheon. The luncheon will be at approximately 1 p.m.

Prizes will be given to the top three teams.

Hole sponsorship opportunities are still available as well.

Huntington University men’s tennis team to host 2 camps this summer

The Huntington University men's tennis team will host two camps this summer at the Merillat Complex Klopfenstein Courts.

The first session is slated for June 10-14 while the second session will run from July 22-25.

There is a cost per child in four age groups, kindergarten to second grade (9:30 a.m.-10 a.m.); third to fifth grade (10-11a.m.); sixth to eighth grade (11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) and ninth to 12th grade (1-2:30 p.m.). Discounts are available if two or more from the same family attend or campers attend both sessions.

Whaley, Rethlake lead way as Lady Vikes blank Kokomo

Makayla Whaley had three hits and two runs batted in and Erin Rethlake extended her scoreless streak as the Huntington North High School varsity softball team blanked visiting Kokomo, 10-0, on Tuesday, May 14.

The win not only improves the Lady Vikings' overall record to 20-1 but also clinched the North Central Conference Crown with a 7-0 mark.

Rethlake, who hasn't been scored upon in her last 17 appearances, limited Kokomo to just one hit while striking out 10 and not walking a batter.

Field events wins fuel Lady Vike trackgirls to sectional title

Winning four of the five field events fueled the Huntington North High School girls' track team to the championship of the Marion Track and Field Sectional on Tuesday, May 14, at Indiana Wesleyan University.

Seniors Alexis Wygant and Onna Doering won the pole vault and discus, respectively, and juniors Lindsey Foster and Maddie Klender captured the long jump and shot put, respectively, as the Lady Vikings piled up 167 points, 57 more than runner-up Oak Hill. Norwell was third with 85 points and Marion was fourth among 13 teams competing with 74 points.

 

Sectional champs


The Huntington North High School girls' varsity track and field team totaled 167 points to win the Marion Sectional at the Indiana Wesleyan University track and field stadium on Tuesday, May 14.

The Huntington North High School varsity baseball team shook off a big Kokomo rally in the sixth inning to score three times in the seventh and beat the host Wildkats, 9-7, on Tuesday, May 14.

The Vikings, 14-7 overall and 8-3 in the North Central Conference, were cruising along with a 6-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth when Kokomo erupted for its half-dozen runs to tie the game. The Vikings, however, pushed across three runs in the top of the seventh and held Kokomo to just one more run in its half of the frame to get the win.

 

Lady Vikes JV goes to 10-4 with win over Kokomo

Abigail Kindler knocked in two runs and Alexandra Kreider had 12 strikeouts on the mound to lead the Huntington North High School junior varsity softball team to a 13-7 win over host Kokomo on Tuesday, May 14.

The Lady Vikings' JV improved to 10-4 on the season as Kreider pitched a complete game and gave up 11 hits with three walks.

 

 

Hiple hits support Rethlake in shutout of Richmond

Alyssa Hiple had a pair of doubles and three runs batted into support Erin Rethlake throwing yet another shutout as the Huntington North High School varsity softball team won 5-0 over visiting Richmond on Friday, May 10.

Rethlake helped support her own efforts with her seventh home run of the season and three runs scored, and Natasha Grover added a pair of safeties to the Lady Vikes' eight-hit attack, which helped push them to 19-1 on the season overall and kept them unbeaten in the North Central Conference.

 

UW and YMCA to host Olympic Day on Aug. 24

The United Way of Huntington County and Parkview Huntington Family YMCA are hosting the 2013 Olympic Day and Sprint Triathalon on Aug. 24.

The event is sponsored by Parkview Huntington Hospital.

Olympic Day will feature Olympic-style events for families and individuals in the community.

Most activities are free. The first 100 participants to sign up receive a free T-shirt.

Community organizations interested in hosting an Olympic event should attend a meeting on Tuesday, May 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the YMCA.

 

Huntington Parks & Rec Department partnering with Clear Creek GC to offer ladies’ golf lessons in summer

The Huntington Parks & Recreation Department will be partnering with Clear Creek Golf Course to provide golf lessons to ladies age 18 and up this summer.

Two classes will be offered: beginners, for women who have never played or had lessons before; and intermediate, for ladies who have played or taken lessons but want to perfect their skills and learn more about the game.

The lessons will be held on Thursday evenings at Clear Creek Golf Course from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on June 6, 13, 20, 27 and July 11 and 18.

There is a fee per person for the six classes.

 

Fun Shoot at Roush on June 9

The seventh annual Fun Shoot will be held at the Roush Fish and Wildlife Area on June 9 from noon to 4 p.m.

J. Edward Roush FWA, National Wild Turkey Federation and Whitetails Unlimited are teaming up to provide a skills challenge for shotgun, rifle and pistol first-time and seasoned shooters.

If possible, it is asked for shooters to bring their own ammo and firearm. However, both will be provided.

A rifle shoot of 50 yards, with 50 rounds (22 rim fire only) will draw prizes and winner's choice.

 

Huntington North to host cheer tryouts on May 20, 21 and 23

Huntington North High School will host cheer tryouts for the 2013-2014 school year on Monday, May 20; Tuesday, May 21; and Thursday, May 23; from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the school gymnasium.

The tryout is for any incoming freshman through seniors.

 

 

American Legion Post 7 hosting golf outing as fireworks fund-raiser

American Legion Post 7 is hosting an 18-hole golf outing on Saturday, May 18, at LaFontaine Golf Club in Huntington.

Tee time will be at 9 a.m., and slots are available for as many teams who would like to participate.

All funds raised will benefit the July 4, 2013, fireworks show.

Reed earns one of four prep cage scholarships given by coaches


Huntington North High School senior Noah Reed was one of four prep basketball players in the state to be awarded the Pat Aikman Character and Leadership Award by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) on Tuesday, May 7.

The IBCA, a statewide coaches group with more than 2,600 members, presents grants of $750 to recipients in the names of Marion Crawley, Junior Mannies and Pat Aikman.

Foresters’ seniors Christner, Lanphier earn Crossroads Gold Glove honors

The Crossroads League has announced its baseball postseason awards for the 2013 spring season and among the list of Gold Glove honorees were Huntington University seniors Adam Christner and Josh Lanphier.

Earning the honor for the third consecutive year, Christner, of Topeka, has established himself as one of the league's best centerfielders.

For the year he was perfect in the outfield, boasting a 1.00 fielding percentage. In 37 games he tallied 83 catches to go along with three assists.

Six wins, including a top three sweep in the 3,200-meter run, carried the Huntington North boys' track team to victory at its own 9th & 10 invitational on Saturday, May 11.

The Huntington North coaching staff had to be smiling about the future in the meet for freshmen and sophomores as the Vikings piled up 218 points to beat runner-up Churubusco by 40 points. Bellmont was third with 123 points, Jay County was fourth with 110 and Marion was fifth with 66.

 

Vikings rally to get split with Richmond

A four-run rally in the seventh inning of the second game gave the Huntington North High School baseball team a 10-9 victory and a split of its doubleheader on Saturday, May 11, against host Richmond.

The Vikings, 13-6 overall and 7-3 in the North Central Conference, lost the opener 6-5 in eight innings. They trailed 9-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh in the second contest after Richmond scored three runs in the top half of the frame.

 

JV Lady Vikings split with Norwell

Aly Grabner had six hits and six runs batted in on the day as the Huntington North High School junior varsity softball team split a doubleheader with host Norwell on Saturday, May 11, losing 15-8 and winning 12-5.

Grabner went 3 for 4 with a single, double, triple and three RBI in the opening game loss, then repeated the 3 for 4 effort in the second game, with two triples, a double and three more RBI to help the JV Lady Vikes improve to 8-4 on the season.

Vikings take it on chin at Bellmont

The Huntington North High School varsity baseball team got outpitched and outhit, losing to host Bellmont 11-1 on Friday, May 10.

The Braves, 4-12, banged out 11 hits to the Vikings' three, plating six in the third inning, two more in the fourth and responded to one by Huntington North with three insurance tallies in the bottom of the sixth.

Hurler Austin Hale, 0-1, took the loss for the Vikings, 12-6, surrendering four earned runs in two frames while walking three. Mitch Hughes and Kory Goodrich were Hale's relief and combined to give up six more earned runs.

 

Lady Vike netgirls fall to Logansport

The Huntington North High School girls' varsity tennis team swept both doubles matches against host Logansport on Friday, May 10, but dropped all three singles matches to lose 2-3.

The reliable duo of Mariah Zumbrun and Ashley Bard came away with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 win over Abby Geer and Karli Armstrong at first doubles for the Lady Vikings, 7-7.

Ana Eckert and Emily Karst got the team's other doubles win with a 6-3, 7-5 decision over Rachel Sims and Kayleigh Dance in the second match.

Mertz leads HNHS trackgirls past Columbia City

Senior Macheala Mertz had two individual victories and was part of a relay win to lead the Huntington North High School girls' track team past host Columbia City, 89-43, on Thursday, May 9.

Mertz captured the 100-meter dash in :12.7 and claimed the 400-meter dash in 1:00.4 to lead the Lady Vikings to 11 wins on the day. She also teamed with Hannah Stoffel, Alexis Wygant and Lindsey Foster to win the 1,600-meter relay, in 4:08.8.

 

Shakamak hoop star signs with HU

Huntington University men's basketball head coach Ty Platt has added another standout to one of the strongest recruiting classes in Forester history with the signing of Shakamak High School senior Brodie Crowe.

After averaging 23.9 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.0 assists per outing during his senior season, the 6-2 guard wrapped up his outstanding prep career with over 1,000 career points and a plethora of awards and honors.

A top three sweep in the pole vault and Jon Rentschler's win in the discus highlighted the evening for the Huntington North High School boys' varsity track team on Thursday, May 9, in a three-way meet with visiting Homestead and Fort Wayne North Side.

The Vikings lost to Homestead, 87-44, and North Side, 72-60.

Senior Adam Berlier led the blitz in the pole vault, topping the bar at 11-6, while teammates Adam Woods and Houston Lehman took second and third, respectively, at 11-0 and 10-6.

Playing Logansport on back-to-back nights, the Huntington North High School varsity softball team followed up a tight 3-0 road win with a much more comfortable 10-2 victory at home against the Berries on Wednesday, May 8.

The Lady Vikings, 17-1, 5-0 in the North Central Conference, had hot bats from the start, plating three in each of the game's first three innings to lead 9-0. Logansport put two runs on the board in the fourth to break the shutout, but an insurance tally in the sixth for Huntington North took the contest to its final register.

The Huntington North High School varsity baseball team broke a 3-3 tie in extra innings with a four-run eighth and then held off host Logansport to win 7-5 on Wednesday, May 8.

Drew Schnitz led the Vikings, 12-5, 6-2 in the North Central Conference, with a home run, three runs batted in and a run scored.

Mitch Hughes added two hits, an RBI and run to the team's cause while Caleb Richison and Evan Brown also supplied two pokes, the latter plating one.

Connor West had the Vikings' other RBI and Derek Snyder scored a team-high two runs.

 

Lady Viking trackgirls lose to Bellmont

Two pairs of first place finishes in field events and relays weren't enough to lift the Huntington North High School girls' varsity track and field team over host Bellmont on Tuesday, May 7, and the Lady Vikings fell 73-59

Paige Coolman's 100-7 fling in discus and Alexis Wygant's spring of 8-6 in pole vault captured Huntington North's golds in field events.

 

Registration open for Roanoke Youth Sports Soccer League

Registration is now open for the Roanoke Youth Sports Soccer League.

The league is divided into four age groups: 4-5; 6-7; 8-10 and 11-14. When registering, parents or guardians are directed to use the player's age as of July 1 this year.

Practices start in early July and games are from July 20 to August 31. Games are played at Roanoke Park.

Run for the Rams sponsor named

First Federal Savings Bank has agreed to serve again as event sponsor for Run for the Rams, the major fund-raiser for Huntington Catholic School. Run for the Rams, featuring a dinner and silent and live auctions, will be held on Saturday, May 11, at the PAL Club in Huntington. Rethlake, Kennedy lead Lady Vikes to 3-0 win over Logansport

Erin Rethlake pitched another shutout and Maddi Kennedy had two doubles and two runs batted in to lead the Huntington North High School varsity softball team past host Logansport, 3-0, on Tuesday, May 7.

Rethlake handcuffed the Lady Berries on just one hit in seven innings and fanned 18, with no walks, as HNHS improved to 16-1 on the season. The junior has not been scored upon in her last 11 outings.

 

HU's Bowers earns 4th all-conference honor

Senior Katie Bowers topped off her decorated Huntington University softball career with her fourth all-conference honor recently.

Freshman Emily O'Leary also was named all-conference.

Last year's conference player of the year, Bowers finished second in the Crossroads League with a .456 batting average. She was also second in the league in slugging percentage, at .808; on base percentage, .537; doubles, 16; and total bases, 101; and finished in the top four in five other offensive categories.

 

Adam Central edges Lady Vike netgirls

The Huntington North High School girls' tennis team was edged by visiting Adams Central, 2-3, on Tuesday, May 7.

The Lady Vikings, 7-6, got wins from Kylie Fredrick at first singles and the No. 1 doubles team of Mariah Zumbrun and Ashley Bard.

The Lady Vikes' second doubles team of Ana Eckert and Emily Karst lost a tough three-setter, 6-3, 0-6, 4-6, for what proved to be the difference.

Fredrick beat Jessica Ripley, 6-1, 6-1, and the No. 1 doubles team enjoyed a 6-2, 6-3 win.

 

Viking diamond men lose 2-1 to Logansport

The Huntington North High School baseball team lost a 2-1 pitchers' duel to visiting Logansport on Tuesday, May 6.

The Vikings scored their only run of the game in the first inning, but Logansport pushed across solo tallies in the fourth and fifth innings against Quinton Smith to earn the win.

The Vikings, 11-5 overall and 5-2 in the North Central Conference, were limited to just three hits by Logansport hurler Kyle Jordan.

 

HU's Wood, Gregory claim crowns at Taylor Invite

Krista Wood and Brianna Gregory turned in the only wins for the Huntington University women's track team at the Taylor University Invitational on Saturday, May 4.

Wood claimed top honors in steeplechase in 12:09.40 while Gregory topped the field in the long jump at 15-8.75.

Gregory had a productive meet as she also placed second in triple jump in 32-3.25 and third in the 100-meter dash in :13.04.

 

HU's DeBoni takes pair of wins at Taylor Invitational

Freshman Daniel DeBoni brought home a pair of gold finishes for the Huntington University men's track team at the Taylor University Invitational on Saturday, May 4.

DeBoni took the 100-meter dash in :11.04 and won the 200-meter dash in :22.48 for two of the Foresters' three wins on the day.

Brandon Hunt got the other HU win by running a 1:02.06 in the 400-meter hurdles.

 

Hill Toppers lose opening day doubleheader at Indy

It was a fine day for the great game of base ball in Huntington on Saturday the 27th. Unfortunately for the local team the game was being played in Indianapolis and neither the weather nor the host - the Indianapolis Hoosiers - were particularly making it a fine day our heroes.

 

Crestview girls' track team fourth at Red Storm Relays

The Crestview Middle School girls' track team placed fourth at the Lincoln Junior High School Red Storm Relays on Saturday, May 4.

The Cougars captured two silver medals on the day. The shuttle hurdle team of Katie Jamison, Karmen Koch, Sara Kauffman and Kenzie Estep grabbed one while the sprint medley unit of Koch, Alex Underwood, Savanna Scott and Jenna Henline came up with the other.

 

Crestview soccergirls second at Leo Invite

The Crestview Middle School girls' soccer team beat Blackhawk, 6-3, in the first round of the Leo Invitational Soccer Tournament on Saturday, May 4, but got blanked by Leo in the championship match, 4-0, finishing second.

Hollyn Anderson supplied a pair of goals for the Cougars against Blackhawk, with Aubrey Eckert, Bri Bates, Jo Neal and Emily Johnson each netting one in the victory. Janessa Dodson and Emmy Ottinger had assists.

Neal, also playing as goalkeeper, recorded 10 saves.

 

PAL arrounces results for week ending May 1

The Huntington Police Athletic League has announced results for play the week ending May 1.

Frederick's Photography kicked its season off in a big way, beating Optimist 17-3. Remax made a similar statement, downing Bailey Love 18-7. Craig Martz won by a much smaller margin against Farm Bureau Insurance 11-10, as did Metro Kiwanis against Bippus Bank, 9-8. A 13-8 victory by Firefighters Local 680 over Andrews 1 and an 8-4 triumph by Horace Mann Apartments over Dirt Trucking rounded out the schedule.

A doubles sweep and a win by Emily Eherenman at third singles earned the Huntington North High School girls' varsity tennis team a 3-2 win over visiting Fort Wayne Snider on Monday, May 6.

The first doubles team of Mariah Zumbrun and Ashley Bard topped Heather Blair and Emily Leitch, 6-0, 6-2, and the second doubles team of Ana Eckert and Emily Karst beat Georgia Baldus and Katsyn Havens, 6-1, 6-4.

Eherenman ran past Martha Manges, 6-2, 6-0, for the clinching win as the Lady Vikes upped their season mark to 7-5.

 

Rethlake pitches Lady Vikes to twinbill sweep over New Castle

The Huntington North High School varsity softball team swept a doubleheader from host New Castle on Saturday, May 4, winning 6-1 and 1-0.

Kaylynn Rosen threw the first two innings of game one before being relieved by Lady Viking ace Erin Rethlake. New Castle had taken a 1-0 lead against Rosen, but Rethlake pitched a perfect game the rest of the way to dash the Lady Trojans' hopes of cushioning their advantage.

Huntington North, 15-1, 4-0 in the North Central Conference, grabbed the lead with a five-run fourth inning and grew it with another score in the fifth.

 

Muncie Central, Richmond top HNHS tennis team

The Huntington North High School girls' varsity tennis team lost by a tally of 1-4 to both Muncie Central and Richmond on the road at a North Central Conference three-way meet on Saturday, May 4.

The first doubles pair of Mariah Zumbrun and Ashley Bard accounted for both of the Lady Vikings' wins, topping Richmond's Julia Hays and Kaitlyn Harrison, 6-1, 6-1, and Muncie Central's Samantha Bartholome and Maggie Burnies, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

The pair of losses snips the Lady Vikings' six-match win string, dropping their record to 6-5.

Viking split twinbill with New Castle

The Huntington North High School varsity baseball team split a doubleheader with visiting New Castle on Saturday, May 4, winning the first game 3-2 and losing the second 6-2.

In game one, a dominant pitching performance by Connor West limited the Trojans to five hits. The junior hurler threw a complete game and improved his record to 5-0, ceding one earned run and fanning 13 while walking only one.

New Castle's Michael Bear also went the distance on the mound, surrendering nine hits and three earned runs while striking out five.

 

Viking trackboys grab silver finish at NCC Championships

Although the Huntington North High School boys' varsity track team only captured one title at the North Central Conference Track and Field Championships at Indiana Wesleyan University's track and field stadium on Friday, May 3, it used a series of competitive finishes to place second with 104 points.

The Vikings' lone championship on the day came from Cordell Lewis in the 3,200-meter run. The senior crossed the line in 9:57.34 and was shadowed by teammate Charles Mettler, who finished second in 9:59.81.

The Huntington North High School girls' varsity track team captured six titles at the North Central Conference Track and Field Championships at Indiana Wesleyan University's track and field stadium on Friday, May 3, and won the meet 156 points.

 

Hiple homers and Rethlake shuts out Norwell in 10-0 HNHS win

Alyssa Hiple smacked a home run and Erin Rethlake extended her scoreless streak to eight appearances as the Huntington North High School varsity softball team defeated host Norwell 10-0 on Thursday, May 2.

Rethlake pitched all five innings, yielding only one hit while fanning 10.

The southpaw hasn't allowed a run since facing Carroll on April 18.

The homer was Hiple's second of the season and the junior went 2 for 3 at the plate with two runs batted in and as many runs scored.

 

HN netgirls whitewash Kokomo

The Huntington North High School girls' varsity tennis team whitewashed host Kokomo, 5-0, on Thursday, May 2, for its sixth consecutive win.

The Lady Vikes, 6-3, got straight set wins from first singles player Kylie Fredrick and the first doubles team of Mariah Zumbrun and Ashley Bard, while Kari Bard at second singles, Emily Eherenman at third singles and the No. 2 doubles team of Ana Eckert and Emily Karst all hung tough to get three-set wins.

Fredrick ran past Morgan Mohr, 6-2, 6-1, while Zumbrun and Bard were 6-0, 6-2 winners over Katy Volikas and Brooke Grider.

 

Forester softball team lives up to its billing by placing 3rd in CL tourney

The Huntington University softball team lived up to its billing as the No. 3 seed in the Crossroads League tournament by placing third in the two-day tourney held April 1-2 at Marian University.

The Foresters went 3-2 over the tourney, beating Grace College 8-4, losing to Bethel College 3-0, blanking Spring Arbor University 5-0, defeating Taylor 3-2 and losing to top-ranked Marian 8-0.

The Foresters finished their season with a 23-18 record.
Katie Knous hit a two-run home run among three hits and Annie Weaver had a triple in the Foresters' win over Grace.

 

HU baseball team out of Crossroads tourney on second day

The Huntington University baseball team lost to Mount Vernon Nazarene University for the second time in two days to end their run at the Crossroads League baseball Tournament on Thursday, May 2.

The Foresters, finishing the season at 12-25, fell to MVNU, 6-3, on Thursday after losing their tourney opener to the same third-ranked squad on Wednesday, 6-2, in 14 innings.

HU, ranked sixth, went to Thursday's play on the strength of beating No. 7 Bethel College 7-2, in the team's second game on Wednesday, May 1.

The Huntington North High School varsity softball team dropped 13 runs on visiting Marion in the fourth inning of their contest on Wednesday, May 1, trouncing the Giants for the second-straight game, 19-3.

The Lady Vikings, 12-1, 4-0 in the North Central Conference, beat Marion on the road 17-5 in their previous game.

A grand slam by Tori Newsome spotlighted Huntington North's huge fourth inning. Huntington North already led 6-0 after plating four in the first and two in the second and the scoring barrage guaranteed a Lady Viking victory.

 

Viking golfers fall close

The Huntington North High School boys' varsity golf team fell to host Homestead by just 10 strokes, 178-188, on Wednesday, May 1.

Grant Meese and Zac Tackett carded matching scores of 45 and Dakota Wibel and Connor Hoke each shot a 49 for HNHS.

Jacob Vinson and Sebastian Eckert were non-scorers with a 51 and 56, respectively.

Gunnar Smith fired a 42 to lead the Spartans. Chris Eigner and Nick Kocks both submitted a 45 and Sam Kuntz had a 46.

The Huntington North junior varsity fell by an even closer margin than their varsity counterparts, 202-206.

 

Viking diamond men rally back for big win

The Huntington North High School varsity baseball team trailed host Marion 4-3 after three innings during their game on Wednesday, May 1, but solid hitting and pitching helped the Vikings take command and win big, 14-4.

Huntington North put four runs on the board in the fourth and seven more in the sixth while shutting down Marion out to take its record to 10-3 and 4-0 in the North Central Conference.

Heaston Schwob and Braydin Stell each homered for the Vikings en route to submitting identical 3 for 4 performances at the plate with four runs batted in.

 

Doubles sweep helps Lady Vike netgirls win fifth in row

The Huntington North High School girls' varsity tennis team swept doubles play and nearly pulled off the same feat in singles action against visiting Manchester on Wednesday, May 1, winning 4-1.

The Lady Vikings, 5-3, have now won five in a row.

Ana Eckert and Emily Karst blanked Reily Ruppert and Allison Smith at second doubles, 6-0, 6-0, and Mariah Zumbrun and Ashley Bard defeated Brittany Ogden and Michaela Pattison at first doubles, 6-0, 6-3.

 

Nun Run, Brother Boogie set for May 25

The Nun Run and Brother Boogie will be held on Saturday, May 25, offering courses for runners and walkers that include the grounds of both Victory Noll and St. Felix Catholic Center, in Huntington.

The course for the 5K Nun Run is mostly on roads, but sections of the course go through Memorial Park and the nature preserve at Victory Noll.

Participants in the 10K Brother Boogie will cover the same course as the Nun Run, but will also run through neighborhoods on Huntington's north side.

Both events begin at 9:15 a.m. at St. Felix Catholic Center, 1280 Hizfield St.

 

Hiple, Hiner, Rosen help HNHS batter Marion, 17-5

Alyssa Hiple, Audrey Hiner and Kaylynn Rosen each went 4 for 4 and combined for nine runs batted in to lead the Huntington North High School varsity softball team to a 17-5 win over host Marion on Tuesday, April 30.

The Lady Vikings, 11-1, got off to a fast start with three runs in the first inning, then scored two in the third and posted a seven-spot in the fourth. They got five more runs in the fifth, and after Marion could only come up with two in the bottom half of the frame, the game was ended on the 10-run rule.

 

Lady Viking trackgirls show well in field but lose to Snider

Winning three field events couldn't make up for the Huntington North High School girls' track team having only two wins on the track as it lost to host Fort Wayne Snider, 73-58, on Monday, April 29.

Paige Coolman and Onna Doering went 1-2, respectively, in the discus, Alexis Wygant and Lauren Sands did the same in the pole vault and Maddie Klender won the shot put with Caitlyn Sands placing third for a big chunk of the HNHS scoring.

 

Vikings rally back from 5 down to beat Marion

The Huntington North High School varsity baseball team rallied from a 5-0 deficit in the fourth inning to hang a 9-5 loss on visiting Marion on Tuesday, April 30.

Devon Goelz went 4 for 4 with two runs batted in and two runs scored to lead the Vikings, 9-3 overall and 3-0 in the North Central Conference.

 

Grabner, Kreider lead Lady Vikes JV over Jay County

Aly Grabner had three hits and Alexandra Kreider struck out 13 batters to lead the Huntington North High School junior varsity softball team to an 8-2 win over host Jay County on Tuesday, April 30.

Kreider gave up only three hits on the afternoon as the Lady Vikes improved to 3-1 on the season.

Corinne Tester added a pair of hits for HNHS.

 

 

Whikto stops Lady Viking JV

Host Whitko put a damper on the big bats of the Huntington North High School junior varsity softball team and did some big hitting of its own as it topped the Lady Vikings 15-5 on Monday, April 29.

The Lady Vikings, 2-1, were limited to three hits, all singles.

Whitko reached losing pitcher Alexndra Kreider for eight hits and seven walks.

 

 

Spring Fling tourney set for May 3-5

OnTurf Sports is hosting 56 baseball teams for the fourth annual Spring Fling Tournament May 3-5 in Huntingon County.

Games will be played at Homier Park, in Huntington; Roanoke Park, in Roanoke; and Andrews Park, in Andrews.

Teams from Indiana and northwest Ohio will compete for the championship in seven age groups, 8 and under through 14 and under. The public is invited to attend.
