Space is still available in the tennis camp and cheerleader clinic being held at Huntington University in January.
The tennis camp, sponsored by the HU men's tennis team, will be held Jan. 2-4 at the Merillat Complex for Physical Education. Sessions are offered for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

The Huntington Y Runners Club invites the area residents to join its members for a New Year's Eve evening run or walk.
This is not a race, just a chance to get in one last workout before the end of 2012.
The group will be meeting in front of Huntington North High School on Monday, Dec. 31, at 7 p.m. for a 5K (3.1 mile) course.
The club is also encouraging participants to donate books suitable for younger children to be distributed or used in YMCA programming.

Sarah Miller-Jennings led five Foresters in double figures as the Huntington University women's basketball team topped the University of St. Francis (IL), 77-65, on Saturday, Dec. 29, to place third in the St. Xavier University Holiday Tournament.
Amelia Recker scored 15 points, Pazia Speed had 14, Allison Greene had 13 and Taylor Foley added 10 for the Foresters, 10-4 on the season.

The Huntington North High School boys' basketball team placed third at the Carroll Shootout by splitting a pair of games on Saturday, Dec. 29.
The Vikings, 7-4, won both of their games on Friday, Dec. 28, but lost to Munster at noon on Saturday, 61-56, before coming back to beat Marion, 54-43, in the evening's consolation contest.
Noah Reed again led the way for HNHS in the consolation game win with 18 points and four assists. Trenton Kern added 10 points and Kyle Platt had nine.

The Huntington University women's basketball team couldn't put out the St. Xavier University fire in the second half and wound up a 77-61 loser in the second round of the St. Xavier Holiday Tournament.
The Foresters, 9-4, trailed at halftime by only five points at 35-30, but then saw the hosts hit 19 of 31 shots for 61.3 percent in the second half to blunt any chance of an HU comeback.
Pazia Speed knocked down 8 of 12 shots from the field and all six of her free throw tries to score a game-high 23 points for HU, and Sarah Miller-Jennings added 13 points.

The Huntington North High School boys' varsity basketball team won both of its games Friday, Dec. 28, at East Noble in the Carroll Shootout.
The Vikings, 6-3, defeated Heritage, 71-48, in the afternoon contest, then came back at night and dropped East Noble, 51-31.
Noah Reed led the way in the Heritage contest, scoring 16 points, while Matt Hogan added a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Kalvin Miller dropped in 14 points and Trenton Kern added 11 to pace the Vikings in the win over East Noble.

Pazia Speed scored nine points and Amelia Recker added eight for HU, which shot 22 of 56 from the field for 39.3 percent and hit 12 of 14 free throw tries for 85.7 percent.

The Vikings' wins came against Angola in the second round, 38-29, Southern Wells in the third round, 51-21, and Logansport in the fifth round, 48-27.
The team recorded 14 pins on the day.
Huntington North fell to eventual tournament champion Snider in the first round, 45-24, and eventual tournament runner-up Fairfield in the fourth round, 38-29.

The Huntington University men's tennis team will host its second annual holiday tennis camp Jan. 2 to 4 at the Merillat Complex for Physical Education.
Camp times are:
• Kindergarten through fifth grade, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
• Sixth to eighth grade, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
• Ninth to 12th grade, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
There is a cost to attend and discounts are available if two or more from the same family attend.

Merryman, who had hit 36 of 44 shots in his previous four games, went 8 of 10 from the field, including 3 of 4 from 3-point land, and hit all 10 of his free throw tries on the way to a game-high 29 points to help the Foresters improve to 10-5 on the season.

The Huntington North High School boys' varsity bowling team placed fifth at the Boone Grove Invitational in Hebron on Saturday, Dec. 15.
Zac Tackett finished sixth individually with a 385 and made the all-tournament team as one of the top seven.
The Vikings were seeded fourth after two team games and three Baker matches, but fell to Highland to secure their fifth place finish.

The Huntington North High School girls' varsity bowling team finished fifth at the Boone Grove Invitational in Hebron on Saturday, Dec. 15.
Ashley Clark tied Homestead's Sydney Brummett for the top individual two-game series at 396 and made the all-tournament team.
The Lady Vikings were in fourth place after two team games and three Baker matches, and then lost to Homestead in match play to place fifth.

The Crestview Middle School boys' eighth grade basketball team edged host Woodside, 43-39, on Thursday, Dec. 20.
Hunter Hollowell put up 16 points for the Cougars, 11-3. Matt Guhl tossed in eight points, Ben Bentz supplied six and Dylan Wynkoop added four to the team's cause.
The seventh grade team came up short against Woodside, 30-24.
Crestview, 7-5, got five points apiece from Collin Landrum, Logan Moreland and Ian McCutcheon. Mitchell McElhaney contributed three points and grabbed six rebounds.

Aubrie Eckert, Ariene Butler and Madison Houser led the Cougars, 0-1, with four points each.
The seventh grade team also fell to Norwell, 29-20.

The Huntington North High School girls' varsity basketball team took a 12-point lead after the first quarter of its game against host Wayne on Wednesday, Dec. 19, and never looked back, winning its second-straight contest, 50-39.
Allyson Trout led the Lady Vikings, 2-9, with 17 points, five rebounds and four assists. Kelsey Hollowell had nine points and Lindsey Foster and Hannah Stoffel each added seven to Huntington North's cause.
Trout shot 7 of 11 from the field, including 3 of 4 frm beyond the arc.

Tackett rolled a 235 in the Vikings' first game win and then upped the count to a 258 to lead the second game victory.
Jon Scott and A.J. Bickel both rolled scores of 186 to back up Tackett in the opener, with Tyler Krepp rolling a 183 and Adam Harris-Shoemaker following with a 130.

The Crestview Middle School boys' eighth grade basketball team lost for only the second time this season, to visiting Edgewood, 34-32, on Monday, Dec. 17.
Hunter Hollowell led the Cougars, 11-2, with 14 points. Ben Bentz and Matt Guhl each tossed in six points.
Ian McCutcheon helped the seventh grade team to a 33-30 win over Edgewood.
McCutcheon put up 19 points for Crestview, 7-4. Logan Moreland had six points.
Trent Cissel grabbed five rebounds and blocked as many shots.

Hunter Hollowell's double-double carried the Crestview Middle School boys' eighth grade basketball team to a 44-30 win over host Wawasee on Thursday, Dec. 13.
Hollowell's 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Cougars, 11-1, was followed by Noah Gass' nine points and Luke Pulver's eight. Patrick Miller made sure his teammates had scoring opportunities, dishing out eight assists.
The seventh grade team lost a squeaker, 41-40.
Ian McCutcheon put up 13 points for Crestview, 6-4, with Collin Landrum and Mason Landrum chipping in 11 and 8, respectively.

In a game that saw 11 lead changes and eight ties, the Huntington North High School boys' varsity basketball team came up short against host Fort Wayne Wayne, 77-71, on Saturday, Dec. 15.
Noah Reed led Huntington North, 4-3, with 22 points. Trenton Kern sank 4 of 6 shots, including 2 of 3 from beyond the arc, to add 13 points, and Kalvin Miller had 12.
The Vikings trailed after the first quarter, 19-9, but responded with 28 points in the second to build a 37-35 halftime lead. The teams went into the final quarter tied at 54-all.

Merryman, a junior, made a three-point play to tie the game for its 11th and final time at 45-all with 8:48 left, then hit another two shots and got an assist as HU opened up an eight-point lead at 53-45 with 5:22 left in the contest.

Amelia Recker supplied another 18 off the bench for the Foresters, followed by Pazia Speed's 13 and Taylor Foley's 12.

The Vikings, 4-2, fired in 11 of 15 shots from the field, including 4 of 5 from beyond the arc, as they took a 34-24 lead at halftime. They put in 8 of 15 in the second half, including 6 of 8 from downtown, in the second half for a 19 of 30, 63.3 percent effort, which included a total of 10 of 13, 76.9 percent, from 3-point land.

Five pins among eight decisions earned the Huntington North High school varsity wrestling team a 42-36 win over host Southwood on Thursday, Dec. 13.
Seniors Sebastian Eckert and Dakota Plasterer picked up two of the falls for HNHS, at 152 and 170 pounds, respectively. Junior Kyle Jolas at 145 and sophomores Tanner Shipley and Layne Emery, at 132 and 195, respectively, got the other sticks.
Ian Hiers at 138 pounds and Josh Danals at 220 both got decision wins for the Vikings, and heavyweight Shawn Renz won by forfeit.

 Photo by Steve Clark. Apparently focusing on finals improves the shooting eye of the Huntington University men's basketball team as it gunned down visiting Ohio State University-Newark, 104-56 on Thursday, Dec. 13.
The Foresters, 6-5, hit 40 of 64 field goal attempts for a season-best 62.5 percent on the night, led by Shane Merryman hitting 12 of 13 on the night on the way to a game-high 27 points.
Merryman had 21 points by halftime as HU jumped out to a 58-27 lead. The Foresters hardly slowed down in the second half as well, outscoring the visitors by a 46-29 margin.

The Riverview Middle School boys' seventh grade basketball team defeated Canterbury, 47-28, on Wednesday, Dec. 12.
Joe Stoffel led the Raiders, 7-1, with 16 points. Devon Rooney chipped in eight points.
The eighth grade team narrowly fell to Canterbury, 44-42.
Lucas Long paced Riverview, 4-6, with 12 points. Wright Carson and Nolan Betterly each added eight.

A solid team effort carried the Crestview Middle School boys' eighth grade basketball team to a 50-43 win over Indian Springs on Tuesday, Dec. 11.
Luke Pulver put up 16 points for the Cougars, 10-1. Hunter Hollowell supplied 12 points and nine rebounds, Patrick Miller tallied nine points and 10 assists, Ben Bentz totaled six points and Noah Gass added five points to the team's cause.
The seventh grade team defeated Indian Springs 37-22.
Mason Landrum and Ian McCutcheon scored nine points apiece for Crestview, 6-3.

The Huntington University cheer squad will host a Junior Forester Cheerleader clinic on Jan. 12 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Merillat Complex for Physical Education.
The clinic is designed for ages 4 years old to eighth grade. There is a cost to attend, which includes a T-shirt and admission to the Jan. 26 Huntington University men's basketball game at which the participants will cheer.
Discounts are available if two or more from the same family attend.

Jackie Ness won the "Top Dog" race in the 12 and under quad division, while Cameron Ness was the "Top Dog" in the 13 and over quad.
The "Top Dog" races are held at the conclusion of individual races, with each skating center coach selecting the team's best racers in both quad and inline for ages 12 and under and 13 and over. A trophy is presented to the winning skating center until the next meet.

The contest contained 14 lead changes and nine ties, with Huntington North having a 14-13 lead at the end of the first quarter but Luers clinging to a 26-25 lead at the half. The Vikings went into the fourth quarter with a 36-35 edge.

The Riverview Middle School boys' seventh grade basketball team edged Wawasee, 54-48, on Monday, Dec. 10.
Joe Stoffel put up 18 points for the Raiders, 6-1. Ethan Shafer supplied 11 and Carson Bolinger tossed in eight.
The eighth grade team defeated Wawasee by a more comfortable margin, 57-34.
Nolan Betterly led Riverview, 4-5, with 14 points. Sam Daugherty and Lucas Long both chipped in 10.

The Crestview Middle School boys' seventh grade basketball team defeated visiting Southern Wells and Eastbrook to win its own invitational on Saturday, Dec. 8.
Collin Landrum scored 14 points to lead the Cougars to a 36-26 victory in the first game over Southern Wells. Logan Moreland added eight points and Ian McCutcheon and Trent Cissel each had four.
Crestview beat Eastbrook in the second game, 49-35. Austin Spahr supplied 12 points for the Cougars, Mason Landrum tallied 10, Moreland and McCutcheon put up six and Cissel added four.

Joe Stoffel led the Raiders, 5-1, to victory with 16 points. Ethan Shafer and Jarrett Gray both added eight points.
The eighth grade team fell to Edgewood, 51-25.
Conner Bauer paced the Raiders, 3-5, with 12 points.

Rollie Knepper shot a hole in one on Saturday, Dec. 1, at Clear Creek Golf Course.
Knepper teed off from the senior tees on hole 11, 138 yards out from the hole. He used a custom hybrid 8 iron and a Callaway ball.
The feat was witnessed by Larry Bishop and John Hibbert.

Heavyweight Shawn Renz led the Vikings with four pins and a record of 4-1, placing second in his weight class.

The Lady Vikings, 0-8, 0-2 in the North Central Conference, shot 22 percent from the field for the game, connecting on just 9 of 41 attempts.
Freshman Hannah Stoffel scored seven points and grabbed as many rebounds to lead the Lady Vikes. Madi Canady and Lindsey Foster produced four points apiece and Maddie Klender matched Stoffel with seven boards.

In a game featuring 12 lead changes and four ties, it came down to second-half free throw shooting as the Huntington North High School girls' varsity basketball team lost to host Canterbury, 57-50, on Thursday, Dec. 6.
The Lady Vikes, 0-7, hit only 5 of 10 for 50 percent at the stripe in the second half while the Lady Cavaliers hit 12 of 13 freebies for 92.3 percent and the difference.
HNHS was up after the first quarter, 14-12, but Canterbury held a 24-23 lead at halftime. The hosts went into the final frame with a 44-37 edge.

 Photo by Steve Clark. Three pins and a technical fall among five victories highlighted the night for the Huntington North High School varsity wrestling team as it lost to visiting Prairie Heights, 54-26 on Thursday, Dec. 6.
Seniors Dakota Plasterer and Josh Danals at 170 and 220 pounds, respectively, and sophomore heavyweight Shawn Renz got the pins for the Vikings, while junior Kyle Jolas kept himself undefeated on the season with a tech fall at 145 pounds by a score of 17-2.
Senior Ian Hiers got the remaining HNHS win, clipping his foe 3-2 at 138.

The Huntington North High School boys' varsity bowling team defeated Jay County at Portland in the Hoosier Conference Baker Position Round on Wednesday, Dec. 5.
A.J. Bickel, Trent Kline, Tyler Krepp, Adam Harris-Shoemaker and Zac Tackett bowled the conference-leading Vikings to an 8-2 win over the Patriots. The team produced scores of 169, 204, 193, 167, 217, 168, 213, 201, 181 and 204. Huntington North topped Jay County in pinfall, 1,917-1,753.
In junior varsity action, the Vikings swept South Adams.

The Huntington North High School boys' junior varsity basketball team couldn't find its shooting touch against visiting New Haven on Wednesday, Dec. 5, and lost 37-33.
The Vikings hit on only 8 of 32 attempts for a mark of 25 percent, while Norwell landed 15 of 32 shots for a percentage of 46.9.
Jordan Sebolt did a bit of everything for the Vikings, scoring 11 points, grabbing four rebounds, dishing out two assists and blocking a shot.
Jakhari Wilbert led the Bulldogs with 11 points.

The Riverview Middle School seventh grade boys' basketball team downed host Crestview, 32-25, on Tuesday, Dec. 4.
Joe Stoffel led the Raiders, 4-1, with 16 points, and Ethan Shafer tossed in seven.
The RMS eighth grade team came up short, 37-33.
Sam Daugherty led Riverview's offensive effort with 17 points. Conner Bauer and Lucas Long each added seven points.
The team's record falls to 3-4.

The Riverview Middle School seventh grade boys' basketball team defeated host Norwell, 32-22, on Monday, Dec. 3.
Joe Stoffel led the Raiders, 3-1, with 15 points and Elliot Lesperance added six.
The RMS eighth grade team fell 52-34.
Lucas Long paced Riverview, 3-3, with 13 points.

The Crestview Middle School eighth grade boys' basketball team won the Tippecanoe Valley Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 1.
The Cougars blasted Rochester, 48-17, to advance to the championship game. Hunter Holloway was the team's leading scorer with 11 points. Elijah Chesterman, Ben Bentz and Spencer Kryder each added six points.
In the championship game, Crestview edged host Tippecanoe Valley, 26-25. Holloway again led the team, scoring eight points, and Bentz contributed seven points to the Cougars' cause.
The team's record stands at 5-1.

The Huntington University women's basketball team let a 12-point slip away in the first half and wound up a77-67 loser to visiting Purdue-Calumet on Tuesday, Dec. 4.
A 3-pointer by Allison Greene with 8:20 left in the opening frame had the Foresters, 7-3, up 30-18, but Purdue battled back and went into halftime with a 40-38 lead.
The Peregrines pushed te margin as high as 12 points in the second half before treys by Greene and Lauren Meese help cut the margin to four with 2:23, but Purdue hit eighth straight free throws down the stretch to seal the deal.

The Vikings' lone win came against Bishop Luers, whom they defeated 40-16. The team lost to Garrett, 48-28; Oak Hill, 46-30; Bishop Dwenger, 48-26; and Norwell, 42-36.
Kyle Jolas, wrestling at 145, led the Vikings with five wins against no losses, with his wins coming on two falls, a technical fall and a major decision.

Noah Reed led all scorers with 22 points, half of which came from the free-throw line, where he sank 11 of 12 attempts. Also coming up big for the Vikings was Kalvin Miller, who scored 11 points, Trenton Kern, who grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and Kyle Platt, who delivered on defense with three blocked shots.

The 22nd-ranked Foresters, 7-2 overall and 2-1 in crossroads League play, used a 14-2 run midway through the first half to turn a 9-8 lead into a 23-10 advantage and never looked back against the Lancers, 7-3.
Taylor Foley led all scorers with 19 points, sinking 7 of 9 shots from the floor and all five of her attempts from the free-throw line.

The Huntington University men's basketball team came up a point shy in its shootout with host Grace College on Saturday, Dec. 1, losing 89-88.
Shane Merryman led the Foresters with 27 points on 9 of 13 shooting. The junior's scoring touch also carried over to the free throw line, where he sank 8 of 9 attempts.
T.J. Short added 15 points, Alec Peterson supplied 13 to go with a team-best eight rebounds, and Ryan Boester and Tyler Ault tallied 12 and 10 points, respectively, to round out Huntington's offensive effort.

Trenton Kern, Noah Reed and Kyle Platt combined for 39 points to lead the Huntington North High School boys' varsity basketball team to a 64-49 win over visiting Southwood on Friday, Nov. 30.
Kern scored 15 points, Reed had 13 and Platt accounted for 11 as the Vikes improved to 2-1 on the season.
HNHS held a 14-8 lead after the first quarter, upped the margin to 30-21 by halftime and went into the final frame with a 48-32 lead.
Kalvin Miller added four assists and three steals to the HNHS cause. Platt was the team's leading rebounder with seven.

After taking a first quarter lead, the Huntington North High School girls' varsity basketball team lost its shooting touch and the game to host Marion, 49-34, on Friday, Nov. 30.
The Lady Vikes finished the night hitting only 9 of 43 field goals, including just 1 of 11 from downtown, for 20.9 percent, explaining their slide from a 14-11 first quarter lead to a 43-23 deficit early in the fourth quarter.
Paige Coolman, the only Lady Vike to hit more than 50 percent on the night, scored 10 points and had eight rebounds to lead HNHS, 0-6.

Nathan Sutter (center) was crowned winner of the Huntington North Vikings' Baseball Team NCAA 2013 video game tournament. Sutter bested a field of 28 competitors to win a Playstation 3 Bundle, including Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty: Black Ops II. The event was a team fund-raiser.
