Cpl. Nick Middaugh, of Huntington, checked out of the United States Marine Corps two weeks ago and returned home to surprise family and friends on Thursday, Sept. 27.

The surprise occurred at Applebee's, in Huntington, where Nick's parents, Rick and Brenda Middaugh, were gathered with family friends, under the impression that they were there for a free meal.

Family friends Bob and Dawn Blubaugh were present and worked with the younger Middaugh to coordinate the surprise.

Middaugh's tour of duty spanned four years and he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan for the duration of it.

He saw 12 different countries during his tour, including Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, Singapore and Korea, he notes.

A 2008 graduate of Huntington North High School, Middaugh says his next goal is to get a job, preferably something that deals with auto body work or firearms.
