Rescues for adoption, wealth of info to be featured at Barktoberfest

Seven rescues showcasing adoptable animals and a wealth of pet-related products will be featured at Barktoberfest on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Hier's Park.

Barktoberfest is sponsored by Lilly Bear's Rescue, based in Warren.

It will follow a vaccination clinic sponsored by Dr. Kerrick A. Deardorff and Riverside Veterinary Clinic, of Warren, which will benefit Lilly Bear's Rescue. The vaccination clinic for dogs and cats will also be held at Hier's Park. Appointments for the vaccinations must be made in advance by calling 530-6483.

Lilly Bear's Rescue and Helping Paws Pet Haven are the Huntington County rescues participating in Barktoberfest. All seven rescues will bring adoptable animals, with up to 100 animals of all types expected to be available to meet prospective pet owners. Those interested in adopting the animals will be asked to fill out applications.

Vendors will offer pet-related products along with a variety of items for their owners.

Hamburgers, hot dogs and chips will be available, and a DJ will be spinning tunes all evening.

A silent auction will begin at 4 p.m. and continue until about 7:30 p.m., with proceeds to Lilly Bear's Rescue.

Members of the Canine Capers 4-H dog club and their dogs will present an obedience demonstration at 4:30 p.m. and agility training demonstration at 5 p.m.

A Halloween costume contest for pets begins at 6 p.m., with prizes and trophies for the cutest, funniest, ugliest and scariest costumed pets.

The evening will include a 50/50 drawing, with the winner receiving half the prize pot. One of the participating rescues will be drawn to receive the other half of the prize pot.

There is no admission charge. Donations of cat litter, towels, pet food, bleach, laundry soap and other items will be accepted and will be divided among the participating rescues.
