Red Cross Blood Services holds annual recognition

The Indiana-Ohio Region of American Red Cross Blood Services hosted its annual recognition dinner at the Fort Wayne Marriott.

Awards were presented to recognize the outstanding achievements and volunteer service of individuals and businesses in the region. Among them were several from Huntington County.

• The Faithful Friends Award recognizes those sponsors who are always willing to open their doors for use of their facilities, even on short notice. Huntington County recepients were Evangelical United Methodist Church, SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church and St. Joseph Catholic Church.

• Our Sunday Visitor was recognized with the Growing by Leaps and Bounds Award. The award recognizes those blood drive sponsors who have either increased the pints of blood donated at their blood drives by 25 percent or more, or they have increased their drive frequency in the last year.

• Parkview Huntington Hospital was nominated for the Hospital Partnership Award, which signifies that they helped ensure a safe and continuous blood supply by supporting blood collections, forming special partnerships with the Red Cross Indiana-Ohio Blood Services Region and participating in professional development opportunities.

Parkview Huntington Hospital hosts at least two blood drives each year. Hospital staff also attend educational events sponsored by the Red Cross. Laboratory staff often request additional sessions to help increase understanding of blood banking among physicians and nurses.

Parkview Huntington Hospital was nominated for exhibiting excellent stewardship of blood products and a willingness to share within the Parkview system to prevent outdating or wastage of blood products.  The hospital was a recipient of the "K.I.S.S." award in recognition of maintaining Type O Negative inventory use at less than 11 percent and total Type O usage below 50 percent.

• Also receiving a Partnership Award was Huntington North High School. Rhonda Adams at Huntington North High School sponsors two of the biggest blood drives in the entire region.  Last year, the Red Cross collected more than 400 units of blood at the two Huntington North drives.
