The deadline to register for a 10-week program at Salamonie Lake to become a certified Indiana Master Naturalist has been extended to March 10.

Participants will be able to use their newly-learned skills as volunteer interpretive naturalists.

The program at the Salamonie Interpretive Center runs March 14 through May 16, mostly on Thursdays from 6 to 9:15 p.m., with some Saturdays scheduled.

The program is sponsored by Upper Wabash Interpretive Services, which serves J. Edward Roush Fish & Wildlife Area, Salamonie and Mississinewa lakes and Ouabache State Park.

To become certified, students must attend the March 14 orientation from 6 to 9:15 p.m., attend at least eight of the sessions, complete a final exam and volunteer 30 hours. Session topics include geology, entomology, wetlands, habitat management, birds, wildflowers, tree identification and forest ecology.

Class size will be limited to 30 students. There is a charge to attend the classes.
