A community open house in honor of Dee Hoffman, who is retiring from the Huntington County Humane Shelter, will be held on Saturday, June 1, from noon to 2 p.m. at the shelter.
Hoffman has been with the organization for more than 20 years and during that time has become "the face of the shelter," says Pat Merckx, a long-time Huntington County Humane Society board member.
Hoffman's frst job at the shelter was cleaning kennels.
Over the years, she took on more responsibilities and helped organize the first animal control programs in the city and county.
Hoffman eventually became manager of the shelter and senior animal control officer, in addition to conducting educational programs in the community.
