Rev. John Daniel Groff, 101, of Huntington, IN, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012.
Rev. Groff graduated from Clear Creek High School, attended Huntington College and graduated from Manchester College in 1931. He earned a Master of Divinity from Yale Divinity School in 1943.
He taught and coached at Bippus High School starting in 1931. After graduating from Yale, he served as a pastor of churches in San Antonio and Fort Worth, TX, while teaching Christian ethics at TCU. He moved to Benton Harbor, MI, in 1953 and served as president of the Berrien County Council of Churches. He returned to Huntington County in 1959, serving at Bethesda E.U.B. Church until returning to full-time teaching at Columbia City High School. He retired from the school in 1977 and continued working on the family farm. He later moved to Claypool, returning to Huntington in the last year.
He was a member of Kiwanis and the Masonic Lodge of Mt. Etna.
He was born May 24, 1911, in Jefferson Township, Huntington County, to Russell and Hazel Hawkins Groff. His first marriage was in 1941 to Helen Eberhart, and she preceded him in death. He married Mary Myerly Reece in 1993.
Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth (Marshall) Sanders; a son, Daniel E. (Lynn) Groff; four grandchildren, Daniel Nelson, of West Virginia; Rebecca (Bill) Whitlock, of Indianapolis; John Daniel (Kayla) Groff, of Minnesota; Jim Groff, of Chicago; and a step great-grandson, Dalton Whitlock.
Calling is Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 W. Park Drive, Huntington. A service will be held on Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, at 11 a.m., with calling one hour prior to the service, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 530 Guilford St., Huntington. Rev. Robert Land and Rev. Evelyn Taylor Haney will officiate. Burial will be at Clear Creek Cemetery, Huntington County.
