Douglas E. Lewis, 65, of rural Columbia City, IN, and a native of Huntington, IN, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013, at 11 a.m. at his home.
Mr. Lewis attended Horace Mann Elementary School, in Huntington, and graduated from Huntington High School in 1966. He completed his apprenticeship to become a journeyman tool and die maker in Fort Wayne.
He first worked in the engineering department of the Scout line at Navistar (International Harvester). In 1987, he went to work for Dana-Spicer Axle as a tool and die maker specializing in machine repair. He was a member of St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church, Rocky Mountain Elk Association, Industrial Chemical and Energy Workers International Union and National Rifle Association.
He was born Feb. 24, 1948, in Huntington to Bob E. and Doris Jean Bitzer Lewis. He married Susan R. Scarbrough on Feb. 7, 1970, in Huntington. His wife survives.
Additional survivors include four daughters, Katherine Lewis and Anissa Lewis, both of Austin, TX; and Amy (Brad) Matchett and Amanda Lewis, both of Columbia City; three sisters, Charlotte Lewis, of Mesa, AZ; Christine (William) Wilson, of Phoenix, AZ; and Beth (Michael) Walker, of Bayfield, CO; and two grandchildren, Robert Maximillian Turk and Ingrid Matchett.
Calling is Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., with a service following at 4 p.m., at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, 207 N. Main St., Columbia City. Rev. Gary Sigler will conduct the service.
