Vernon Chester Coy, 80, of Huntington, IN, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2013, at 11:28 p.m. at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.
Mr. Coy graduated from Purdue University in 1956 and received a master's degree from Ball State University. He was a teacher in the Huntington County Community School Corporation for more than 30 years, teaching math and science at Union School, Crestview School and Huntington North High School. After retiring, he continued tutoring in Huntington.
Mr. Coy served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958 and was based in Alaska. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Huntington, the Indiana State Teachers Association, National Education Association, Huntington County Teachers Association and Indiana Retired Teachers Association.
He was born Sept. 3, 1933, in Phoenix, AZ, to Earl and Laura Etta Engle Coy. He married Peggy Ann Hollopeter on Oct. 19, 1963, in Sims. His wife preceded him in death on Oct. 5, 2009.
Survivors include a daughter, Laura Spaulding, of Sarasota, FL; three sons, David Edward (Sherry) Coy, of Buffalo, NY; Brian R. Coy, of New Castle; and Rev. Paul E. (Rita) Coy, of Jacksonville, FL; and three grandchildren, Christina Gonzalez, Angela Coy and Carmelita Coy.
Calling is Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the First Church of the Nazarene, 1555 Flaxmill Rd., Huntington. A service will be held at the church on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at 10 a.m., with calling one hour prior to the service. Rev. Keith White will officiate. Burial will be at St. Peter's First Community Church Cemetery, Huntington.
