Leona I. Patterson

Leona I. Patterson, 91, having family members in Roanoke, IN, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, in North Manchester.

Mrs. Patterson lived in Indianapolis for nearly 30 years, then was a resident of Brown County for more than 30 years. She earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Northern Michigan University, in Marquette, MI, and a master's degree in library science from Butler University. She was a librarian at Harrison Hill Elementary School, Lawrence, and retired in 1989 after 15 years as a librarian at Indian Creek Middle School, in Trafalgar.

She was a Girl Scout leader for many years and was a member of the National Education Association, Countryside Spinners and Weavers of Johnson County, Brown County Bluebird Society and the Humm'n Strummers musical group.

She was born Oct. 30, 1922, in St. Hilaire, MN, to Oscar F. and Leona L. Just Carlson. She married Patrick O. Patterson on July 29, 1945, and he preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Patrick I. (Barbara) Patterson Jr., of Wisconsin and Washington, DC; and three daughters, Peggy J. Naile, of Whiteland; Wendy J. (John) Ostermeyer, of Monrovia; and Vicky L. (Steve) Eisenhut, of Roanoke; a twin sister, Leora I. Markwort, of California; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life gathering will be held on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, at 2 p.m. at the Morgantown United Methodist Church, 20 E. Washington St., Morganown.
