Joan M. Clapp, 83, of Columbia City, IN, and having family members in Huntington, IN, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at the Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home, Fort Wayne.
Mrs. Clapp graduated from Larwill High School in 1947 and attended Wayne University Beauty College, Fort Wayne. She had been employed by LaCharm Beauty Shop in Columbia City, as a receptionist at Weatherhead in Columbia City and as a teacher's aide at Mary Raber School for 17 years.
She was a member of Columbia City United Methodist Church, where she taught fourth grade Sunday school, Delta Theta Tau Gamma Chapter, People Preserving History of Whitley County, Coterie and the Bridge Club. She was a Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout assistant and a volunteer at the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Gardens in Fort Wayne.
She was born July 19, 1929, near Larwill to C. Earl and Hazel L. Schuh Norris. She married Douglas R. Clapp on Aug. 20, 1950. Her husband preceded her in death on July 4, 1989.
Survivors include a son, Richard D. (Rebecca) Clapp, of Churubusco; two daughters, Patrice (Dr. Al) Martin, of Lowell, and Karen (Michael) Henline, of Huntington; a brother, Dean Norris, of Fort Wayne; a sister, Violet Hileman Pfister, of Fort Wayne; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A service was held on Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. Burial was at South Park Cemetery, Columbia City.
Preferred memorials are gifts to the Whitley County Community Foundation or Columbia City United Methodist Church.
