The Huntington North High School boys' varsity bowling team finished second in sectional play at Decatur on Monday, Jan. 14, to advance to regionals in Fort Wayne.
The Vikings were in first place after match play and five Baker matches. The last hurdle was a two-game Baker playoff with second place Norwell, where the teams play for the championship title with only the total score of those two games counting.
In the first game, Norwell topped Huntington North, 208-183. Though the Vikings won the second game, 182-181, the Knights had the higher combined score and won both the playoff and the sectional, 389-365.
Tyler Krepp led Huntington North in the first game of match play, rolling a 224, followed by A.J. Bickel's 180, Adam Harris-Shoemaker's 179, Jon Scott's 156 and Zac Tackett's 155 for a team total of 894.
In the second game, the Vikings improved their performance as Harris-Shoemaker strung together a series of strikes to lead the team with a 243, followed by Tackett's 214, Krepp's 192, Scott's 172 and Bickel's 143 for a team total of 964.
Huntington North entered the five Baker matches with a score of 1,858, topping Bellmont's 1708 and Norwell's 1669.
At the end of five games, the Vikings had scores of 190, 223, 175, 186 and 163 for a total of 937, good enough to retain their lead before entering the two-game Baker playoff with Norwell.
The bowlers with the highest two-game scores from match play were named to the Hoosier Conference All-Tournament team. Harris-Shoemaker's 422 gave him second place and Krepp's 416 snagged him third.
