Chrissy Machielson, DPT, is senior therapist at Indiana Physical Therapy, located at 2916 Wal-Mart Drive, in Huntington.
Machielson says the clinic, which opened for business on Jan. 7, is part of a franchise.
"It was originally started by three therapists," she states. "Today, there are 12 locations in northeast Indiana."
Other offices are located in Fort Wayne, New Haven, Angola and Auburn, Machielson adds.
"We specialize in pain treatment," she says. "Prior to us being here, the only local option people had was the hospital."
Machielson holds a doctorate of physical therapy from Sacred Heart University and is an orthopedic certified specialist. She has also completed several courses in manual therapy, muscle energy techniques and the McKenzie approach.
"We see patients who have back and neck pain, shoulder and ankle injuries and older patients with balance issues," Machielson states. "I also specialize in soft tissue and joint mobilization and core exercises."
While she is the only certified therapist on location regularly, Machielson says that Dave Kuhn, one of the clinic's owners is on site on Tuesdays if needed.
"We accept most forms of insurance including Medicare and Medicaid," she adds. "However, due to state law, we can only see patients who have a prescription from a doctor."
Indiana is the only state in the union that requires a doctor's prescription before a patient can receive treatment, Machielson notes.
Hours of operation for the clinic are Monday to Thursday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
"We hope to offer residents a good physical therapy clinic," Machielson adds. "All with the intention of helping people to get back to normal life and the things they enjoy doing."
