The Huntington County Community Foundation announces that 2013 Charles and Wilma Sanger Shuman Family Scholarships have been awarded to Doug Baker, Erica Carroll, Rachel Decker, Steven Freck, Jenna Heaston, Jaclyn Hiner, Alex Hoffman, Sara Hoffman, Sarah Johnson, Mariah Meadows, Kayleigh Mower, Alex Overby, Alan Poon, Landon Poulson, Jeremy Rice, Drew Schnitz, Zach Shearer, Josanna Stern, Mark Wiley and Aaron Wolf.
Baker, a 2011 graduate of Huntington North High School, attends Wabash College majoring in psychology with a minor in education. He is the son of Delynn Johnston-Baker, of Huntington, and Matthew Baker. His career goal is to coach cross country and track in order to affect the lives of young athletes. While in college, Baker has volunteered at both the Montgomery County Humane Society and Leadership Council.
Carroll, a graduating senior at HNHS, plans to attend the University of Saint Francis, majoring in nursing.
She is the daughter of Rose and Brian Carroll, of Warren. At HNHS, Carroll was a freshmen mentor and council member and a math tutor. She attended Hoosier Girls State and volunteers at Parkview Huntington Hospital and through 4-H at Heritage Pointe.
Decker, a 2011 graduate of Huntington North High School, is majoring in art and English literature at Manchester University. She is the daughter of Taya and Philip Decker, of Huntington. At Manchester, Decker is employed part time in the art department as a gallery docent and student assistant. She has volunteered through 4-H, Victory Noll, the Honeywell Center, in Wabash, and the Solid Rock United Methodist Church, in Warren.
Freck, a 2012 graduate of Huntington North, is currently attending the University of Indianapolis majoring in social work with the goal of working with the geriatric population in a nursing home setting. He is the son of Melissa and Greg Freck, of Marion. At college, Freck is a student ambassador in the Admissions Office, a member of the United Methodist Student Association and participates in a men's Bible study. He made the dean's list and has been accepted in the university's Honors College.
Heaston, a 2012 graduate of Huntington North, attends Indiana Wesleyan University majoring in marketing with plans to open a bed and breakfast on a working farm. She is the daughter of Julie and Steven Heaston, of Huntington. At college, Heaston has helped raise funds for the Grant County Rescue Mission. At her church ,she teaches Sunday school and is director of Wesleyan Kids for Missions.
Hiner, a graduating senior at HNHS, plans to attend Indiana-Purdue University, Fort Wayne, and is undecided on a major. She is the daughter of Lisa and Robert Hiner, of Roanoke. During her high school career, Hiner has been involved in student and class councils, freshmen mentoring, Leading Leos, DEKA yearbook and is a National Honor Society member. She is involved in 4-H Junior Leaders and recreational softball.
Alex Hoffman, a 2010 Huntington North grad, attends Huntington University majoring in computer science, accounting and philosophy with the options of earning a doctorate of philosophy and teaching, becoming a CPA or trying his hand as a computer programmer. He is the son of Debra and Galen Hoffman, of Huntington. At college, Hoffman is the media and web editor of The Huntingtonian and a philosophy department teaching assistant.
Sara Hoffman, a 2012 graduate of Huntington North, attends the University of Saint Francis studying toward a BSN in nursing. Her career goal, after gaining some nursing experience, is to be a labor and delivery nurse or return to school to earn a doctor of nursing practice degree.
Johnson, a graduating senior at Huntington North, plans to attend Huntington University majoring in nursing and participating on the track team. She is the daughter of Beth and Michael Johnson, of Roanoke. A National Honor Society member, Johnson was a member of the HNHS track team and was involved in the photography and art clubs, freshmen mentoring, tutoring, Student Athletic Board and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Her volunteer activities included Summer of Service, Serve Saturdays, youth group projects and at the Forks of the Wabash.
Meadows, a 2011 graduate of Huntington North, attends Manchester University majoring in biology and chemistry with the goal of becoming a veterinarian for small exotic animals. She is the daughter of Susanne and Rick Meadows, of Huntington. Her volunteer work has involved the Huntington City-Township Public Library, Huntington Veterinary Hospital and the Huntington County Humane Shelter.
Mower, a 2010 graduate of Huntington North, attends Anderson University majoring in Christian ministries with minors in Spanish, family science and biblical studies. She is the daughter of Lori and Troy Mower. Her career plan involves working with young women to improve their self-identity and self-worth.
Overby, a graduating senior at Huntington North, will be attending University of Southern Indiana majoring in either exercise science or TV production. He is the son of Jennifer Hofmann and Gerald Overby, both of Huntington. Overby ran cross country and track and field at HNHS and volunteered at his church delivering food to disabled individuals.
Poon, a 2012 graduate from Huntington North, attends Purdue University majoring in engineering with plans to become a biomedical engineer working with medical instruments. His dream would be to engineer a device that would improve the health of people that are in less fortunate situations. He is the son of May and Lap Yan Poon of Huntington.
Poulson, a 2012 graduate of Huntington North, currently attends Manchester University majoring in pharmacy with plans to earn a doctorate in pharmacy. He is the son of Marsha and Donald Poulson, of Warren. At Manchester, Poulson is a member of the American Chemistry Society, the Tri Beta Biology Society and the Pre-Pharmacy Club. He was recognized with an Academic Achievement Award, volunteers as a chemistry tutor and collects food for a North Manchester food pantry.
Rice, a 2012 graduate senior of Huntington North, currently attends Indiana Tech majoring in criminal justice with a career goal of working in law enforcement. He is the son of Jill and Steven Rice, of Warren.
Schnitz, a graduating senior at Huntington North, will be attending Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology majoring in engineering with plans to apply that knowledge toward a career in aviation, including obtaining a pilot's license. Schnitz, treasurer of the HNHS National Honor Society, has been involved in 4-H, Student Leaders, DECA, Student Athletic Board, Campus Life and Class Council, all while participating as a four-year member of HNHS football and baseball teams.
Shearer, a graduating senior at Huntington North, will be enrolling at Ivy Tech majoring in business administration and management in order to expand his dog kennel business that he has operated since fifth grade. He is the son of Julie and Gregory Shearer, of Huntington. Shearer has been involved in Huntington County 4-H, the HNHS Variety Show, FFA, class council and freshmen mentoring. He is a graduate of the Huntington County Youth Leadership Academy. His volunteer work includes Love INC, New Life Meal Ministry and mission trips to Kentucky.
Stern, a 2010 graduate of Huntington North, attends IPFW majoring in accounting with the goal of becoming a CPA. She is the daughter of Jeanne and Shawn Stern, of Columbia City. At IPFW, Stern is a member of the Accounting Society and has gained experience through accounting internships at Joseph Decuis, A&B Boring and David Culp and Company.
Wiley, a 2011 graduate of Huntington University begins his third and final year attending the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in Indianapolis. He is the son of Debbie and Joseph Wiley. During law school, he has been involved in the Dean's Tutorial Society and Indianapolis Bar Association. His volunteer work has included providing after-school homework help at the Shepherd Community Center. Wiley also has interned with the United States Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection Office in Indianapolis.
Wolf, a 2011 graduate of Huntington North, is currently attending Trine University majoring in accounting and finance with the goal of earning an MBA and becoming a CPA. He is the son of Emilie and Mark Wolf, of Huntington. At Trine, Wolf is on the president's list and honor roll, plays football and is a member of the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, Student Government Campus Activities Board, American Marketing Association and the National Society of Leadership and Success. He is also a tutor at a local elementary school and has participated in a church-sponsored mission trip to Mexico.
Charles Shuman was a resident of Huntington County and farmed in southern Huntington and Wabash counties. He and his wife, Wilma Sanger Shuman, created this scholarship for graduating Huntington North seniors and non-traditional students.
