Marian double dips winless HU baseball team

The Huntington University baseball team dropped a pair of games to host Marian University on Saturday, March 23, losing 5-4 and 4-3.

In game one, the Foresters picked up a run in the top of the first only to have the Knights respond with three of their own in the bottom of the inning. Another run by Marian in the second put Huntington in a 4-1 hole heading into the third.

The Foresters rallied, though, plating runners in the third, fifth and sixth innings while holding the Knights scoreless to tie the game up 4-4 going into Marian's half of the sixth.

But that's all the closer Huntington would get, as the Knights got a run to unknot the game and sent David Hertel to the mound in the top of the seventh to save the 5-4 contest.

Blake Ayers went 2 for 3 at the plate for Huntington, 0-12, scoring a run. Josh Lanphier and Adam Christner each went 1 for 3 with an RBI, with the latter swiping a game-high three bases.

Tom Green was the offensive standout for Marian, 3-8, belting a homer, driving in two runners and scoring a run of his own.

The Knights out-hit the Foresters 7-6.

John Ripke was the losing pitcher for Huntington, giving up an earned run and a run in 1.1 innings of work. Aaron Smith was the winner for Marian, yielding six hits in as many innings and striking out four.

In the second game, the Foresters appeared to be heading toward a 3-0 win when Marian blasted them for four runs in the bottom of the seventh to steal the victory, 4-3.

Christner contributed two hits and as many runs to Huntington's cause, while Lanphier and Jamon Hammel each produced an RBI.

Overall, the Knights had 10 hits to only four for the Foresters and four batters with two hits.

Xyan Adkisson pitched 6.2 innings for Huntington, surrendering nine hits, three runs, one earned, while striking out three. Blake Hohlbein got tagged with the loss.

Tyler Sims pitched the first five innings for Marian before turning things over to Beau Freeland, who gave up only one hit in two frames to pick up the win.
