Peru tops HNHS girls' tennis team in opener

The first doubles team of Mariah Zumbrun and Ashley Bard provided the lone win for the Huntington North High School girls' varsity tennis team as it lost to host Peru, 1-4, in its season-opener on Tuesday, April 9.

Zumbrun and Bard, both seniors, went three sets to down Kyle Eckerley and Breanna Mawriquez, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.

Kylie Fredrick at first singles also went to three sets, but lost 3-6, 6-1, 4-6 to Madison Deniston.

Second singles player Kari Bard fell to Jayna Huber, 4-6, 4-6, and Emily Eherenman at third singles lost to Adri Ward, 1-6, 3-6.

The second doubles team of sophomore Ana Eckert and freshman Emmie Karst fell to Kaylee Hileman and Mallory Struble, 2-6, 5-7.

HNHS won the junior varsty match, 5-4.

In singles, Casey Richman beat Grace Comersford 8-3, Saray Fryman beat Jessica Olinger, 8-2 and Maddi Phillips topped Ky Schaffi, 8-2. The duo of Jessica Onate and Alisha Leffler zipped past their Peru foe, 8-0, and Addison Clark and Josi Stranger took an 8-2 win.
