Three to wave HNHS banner at state girls' track meet

Three field events competitors were the only Lady Vikings to qualify for the state track meet at the Fort Wayne Northrop Girls Track Regional on Tuesday, May 21.
Senior Alexis Wygant in pole vault and juniors Maddie Klender and Lindsey Foster in shot put and long jump, respectively, will be waving the HNHS banner at the state championships on Saturday, June 1, at Indiana University.
Klender had the best HNHS finish on the day, placing second in the shot with a throw of 38-1.50, while Wygant got the third and final qualifying spot in the vault with a height of 9-6. Foster only placed ninth in the long jump, but her distance of 17-4.50 exceeded the state meet standard of 17-4 and earned the junior her ticket.
Klender was runner-up to Summer Blackmore of Kokomo in the shot as Blackamore took the event with a heave of 43-4. Sara McKeeman of Carroll won the pole vault at 12-0, with
Anh Pham of Kokomo second at 11-6.
Holly Hankenson of Bellmont was the long jump winer at 18-11.75.
The Lady Vikings finished ninth as a team out of 30 squads, scoring 23 points. Fort Wayne Northrop won the meet with 78 points, followed by Bellmont with 68 points and Carroll with 66.
The Lady Vikings missed by one place of advancing on in the 3,200-meter relay, finishing fourth with a time of 9:37.75. Team members were Kayla Patrick, Hannah Stoffel, Stephanie McElhaney and Lauren Daas.
Senior Machaela Mertz got the next-best finish for HNHS as she placed sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.29.
