Bluffton clips HNHS girl swimmers in opener

The Huntington North High School girls' varsity swimming team narrowly lost to visiting Bluffton, 86-84, in its season-opening meet on Tuesday, Nov. 19.

Senior Cassy Lange and freshman Emma Helmich each recorded two first place finishes in individual events to contribute 12 points apiece to the Lady Vikings' register.

Lange captured the top spots in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.86 and 1:11.62, respectively.

Helmich was the class of the pool in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard butterfly, clocking in at 2:35.63 in the IM and at 1:08.85 in the butterfly.

Both swimmers were on the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relay teams that logged first place finishes for Coach Mycal Rodenbeck's team, producing a combined 16 points for Huntington North.

Both teams consisted of Lange, Helmich, sophomore Maggie Warpup and junior Katie Schenkel. The quartet swam the medley in 2:06.14 and the freestyle in 4:21.27.

Warpup's first place showing in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:59.07 rounded out the Lady Vikings' golden finishes.

Schenkel supplied eight points to Huntington North's cause with runner-up showings in the 500-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in 6:17.07 and 1:20.81, respectively.

Senior Laura Speziali grabbed five points in two freestyle races, swimming to third in the 200 free in 2:40.50 and fourth in the 100 free in 1:12.19.

Supplying five more points to the Lady Vikings' tally was freshman Alexis Miller, who was third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:26.08 and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle in 31.09.

Speziali and Miller teamed up for the 200-yard freestyle relay along with senior Addison Clark and sophomore Cassidy Butler and the foursome earned two points for their third place finish in 2:12.12.

Speziali also swam in the 400-yard freestyle relay, banding with sophomore Kaitlin Biehl and freshmen Alexandra Short and Emma Gordon to finish third in 4:57.65, good for two more points.

Miller joined with Biehl, Clark and junior Alayna Kiefer to take third in the 200-yard medley relay in 2:23.64, garnering another pair of points for Huntington North.

Clark chipped in three points with a fourth place showing in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:56.96 and a fifth place finish in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:16.62.

Butler placed fifth in a pair of 100-yard events, swimming the breaststroke in 1:41.32 and the butterfly in 1:31.13.

Short also landed in the spot No. 5 two times, in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:48.20 and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:33.06.

A fourth place finish by Gordon in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:48.20 and a fifth place performance by Biehl in the 500-yard freestyle in 7:29.99 rounded out Huntington North's scoring.
