Norwell gets HNHS girls down early in 56-44 loss

Sharp three-point shooting by visiting Norwell put the Huntington North High School girls' varsity basketball team in an early hole that it never climbed out of, falling 56-44 on Wednesday, Dec. 18.
The Lady Knights connected on 7 of 11 first half treys for 63.6 percent to open up a 19-6 lead after one quarter and a 34-25 margin after two. Second-half shooting woes finished Huntington North as Norwell increased the lead to 48-33 after three frames.
Senior Paige Coolman led the Lady Vikings, 3-5, with 11 points. Senior Lindsey Foster and sophomore Madi Canady supplied 10 points apiece, with the latter adding seven rebounds and three steals.
Huntington North shot 17 of 50 from the floor for an even 34 percent. The Lady Vikings fired at a clip of 43.5 percent in the first half, but lost their shooting touch after intermission, connecting on just 7 of 27 attempts for 25.9 percent. Huntington North came up empty from three-point land, 0 for 8, and went 10 for 15 at the line for 66.7 percent.
Hannah Smith posted a game-high 15 points for Norwell, 6-1. MacKenzie Sawyer netted 11 points and Stephanie Conrad tossed in nine.
The Lady Knights finished 19 for 41 from the field for 46.3 percent and 7 for 14 from long distance for 50 percent. At the stripe, they went 11 for 19 for 57.9 percent.
Conrad collected eight rebounds, a total that sophomore Hannah Stoffel equaled for Huntington North, which won the rebounding battle, 33-29.
The Lady Vikings lost the junior varsity game, 30-16. Junior Morgan Butler produced seven points and junior Aly Grabner recorded 10 boards.
