McKinney pitching helps Foresters split with SAU
Monday, April 7, 2014 4:16 PM
Senior Derek McKinney threw a complete game three-hitter to help the Huntington University baseball team beat host Spring Arbor in the second game to salvage a split of their doubleheader on Saturday, April 5.
The Foresters, 11-17 overall and 5-9 in Crossroads League play, lost the opener 6-2, but won the second game 5-2 behind McKinney, who struck out five, walked two and gave up the only Spring Arbor runs in the sixth inning.
Blake Ayers, Shea Beauchamp and TJ Lindstrand each had two of the Foresters 11 hits in the contest.
HU put up a three-spot in the first inning and added solo tallies in the second and sixth innings, taking a 5-0 lead before SAU got on the board. But McKinney pitched a scoreless seventh to quell any thoughts of a Cougar comeback.
Dylan Henricks, Beauchamp, Jordan Ham, Dalton Combs and Heaston Schwob picked up the runs batted in for the Foresters.
Spring Arbor did the early scoring in the opener, reaching HU hurler Brock Gower for four runs in the first inning and solo tallies in the second and sixth. The Foresters scratched out single runs in the fifth and seventh innings.
The Cougars designated hitter, Mitchel Patterson, was his team's big stick with three hits and a pair of RBI.
HU got six hits in the contest, with Lindstrand and Austin Drummond collecting the RBI.
