State denies HCCSV waiver; teachers to miss conference

The Huntington County Community Schools have been denied a state waiver that would have allowed the corporation to cancel classes for one full day, instead of two half days, for teacher training.

The denial means that HCCSC teachers won't be able to attend a conference the corpora-tion is hosting later in the school year, HCCSC superintendent Tracey Shafer told mem-bers of the corporation's Board of Trustees during their meeting on Monday, Aug. 10.

The denial, however, does not change the 2009-10 school calendar already published.

HCCSC was denied the waiver previously, but Shafer said he wanted a written explanation from Indiana School Superintendent Dr. Tony Bennett.

Shafer said that, in the past, Indianapolis middle schools were allowed to combine two half-days into one full day for a national middle school conference.

Shafer noted that Bennett said HCCSC's circumstance didn't meet the state's requirements, and Shafer is looking into getting these requirements and more information.

In other business, the school board:

• Approved back pay for the Huntington North High School kitchen manager for her time spent as fill-in manager.

• Lon Whitted was added as an officer for the HNHS Security and Traffic Control.

• A contract was approved to renovate the HNHS soccer field.
