Riverview, Salamonie win boys' middle school titles

Riverview and Salamonie middle schools faced off in the seventh grade championship game in the Huntington County boys' middle school basketball tournament on Thursday, Feb. 5, with the Salamonie team taking the title.
It's the first time since 1994 the Salamonie seventh grade boys' team has won the county championship.

In the eighth grade boys' tournament, Crestview and Riverview met for the championship game, also on Feb. 5, with Crestview ending up on top.

Salamonie defeated Crestview 37-24 to win the seventh grade boys' county title.
Grant Canady and Kennan Mooberry each had 11 points for Salamonie, with Colton Mooberry tossing in eight points. For Crestview, high scorers were Matt Hogan with 10 points and Caleb Stoffel with six.

The final score in the eighth grade title game was 44-30, with Crestview beating out Riverview to win the championship.

Austin Paul led Riverview with 14 points, and Kalvin Miller contributed nine. For Crestview, Braydin Stell led with 15 points; Noah Reed had 12, and Evan Brown had 11.

In seventh grade preliminary action, Crestview defeated Riverview 33-23 on Monday, Feb. 2.

Caleb Stoffel led Crestview with 10 points; Grant Meese, Matt Hogan and Kyle Platt each had six points and Charles Dydasco added five points.

For Riverview, Riley Velez scored eight points, Connor West had seven, Kody Smith and Alex Easley each tossed in three points, and Mitchel Hughes had two.
In the second seventh grade game on Monday, Feb. 2, Salamonie defeated Southern Wells 52-20. Kennan Mooberry and Grant Canady, each with 11 points, led Salamonie in scoring. Also for Salamonie, Colton Mooberry had 10 and Ethan Riddell had eight.

The eighth grade boys played their preliminary games on Tuesday, Feb. 3, with Crestview defeating Salamonie 52-26. Matt Mounsey scored 11 points for Crestview and Andy Spahr tosed in eight points. For Salamonie, Paul Ehler scored 13 points and Jason Ervin had six.

Riverview's eighth grade won its game against Southern Wells by a score of 59-22. All Riverview players scored during the game, with Kalvin Miller leading the way with 13 points. Caleb Richison had 11 and Austin Paul tossed in 10 for Riverview.
