Roanoke Town Council promotes Parker to asst. utility superintendent

The Roanoke Town Council promoted Eric Parker to assistant utility superintendent at its meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 1.

Parker, who had been the utility department’s senior maintenance worker, succeeds John Hitzemann, who recently retired.

The board also promoted Jason Porter, utility department employee, to Parker’s position and hired Macy McClellan to fill Porter’s role.

McClellan will join the department on Friday, Aug. 18. That date is also when Parker and Porter’s salaries will reflect their new positions.

Council discussed how it should respond to overgrown yards that violate town ordinance. While the board was resolute that it would not authorize the spraying of chemicals in those yards to kill weeds, it agreed that those properties would continue to be mowed by the town.

Supervisor of Operations Phil Hibbert informed council that a water main extension project would be completed later in the week. At the board’s July 5 meeting, it approved the extension of water pipes to the under-construction Dollar General store along US-24.

Hibbert added that Element Fort Wayne had finished collecting samples at the lagoon nearby the town’s wastewater treatment plant that the Indiana Department of Environmental Management wants to see closed. Regarding the lagoon’s closure, Hibbert noted that both he and consulting firm DLZ were exploring funding options for the project.

At the behest of Town Marshal Jim Wood, council specified that in order to operate a golf cart in town, one must be at least 16 years old and possess a valid driver’s license.

Council President Dave Tucker stated that he had spoken with Bob Caley, Huntington city services superintendent, about the installation of the splash pad at Drover Park. Tucker said that he would like to see such an amenity constructed at Roanoke Park, but noted that such a project was years away from receiving serious consideration.
