Doubles duo shines for HU women’s tennis at ITA tourney

Lisa Colling and Lanae Singleton, a doubles duo from the Huntington University women’s tennis team, topped the consolation bracket at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championships, held Thursday, Sept. 14, to Saturday, Sept. 16, at Indiana Wesleyan University.

Colling and Singleton competed at the three-day event alongside the rest of their Forester teammates. The pair of freshmen turned in the team’s best performance of the competition, going 4-1 on their way to the consolation title.

After the twosome got edged, 7-9, by Marian University’s Elise Betscher and Maria Sunga in the round of 32, they bounced back with an 8-2 victory over their Huntington teammates Erin Van Kampen, a senior, and Allison Smith, a sophomore, in the first consolation round. After that, Colling and Singleton bested Taylor University’s Shelby Robins and Molly Pile, 8-2, then took down Courtney Clark and Taelor Grose, also from Taylor, 8-3, to earn a spot in the championship match. In the title tilt, they faced Monika Wynne and Barbara Haikal, dispatching the Spring Arbor University duo with ease, 8-1.

Another Huntington doubles team faired respectably at the competition, with the twosome of senior Constanze Golz and sophomore Meg Dolde advancing to the round of eight in the main bracket. The pair defeated Briana Diehl and Shelby Bankson, of Grace College, 8-3, before downing Maria Lueken and Anne Taylor, of Marian University, by the same score. Any hopes they had of advancing any further, though, were dashed by the Indiana Wesleyan duo of Alex Mella and Lizzie Bauss, which dispatched them, 8-3.

In singles play, Golz was the only player to log more than one win for the Foresters. She topped Grace College’s Jenna Jackson, 6-4, 6-0, then Frederique Span, of University of Northern Ohio, 6-1, 6-2, before falling to Camila Puente, also of UNOH, 3-6, 3-6.
