HU spikers lose five-set thriller to Marian

The Huntington University volleyball team lost a five-set thriller to visiting Marian University, 2-3, on Saturday, Sept. 23.

The Knights kicked off the match with a 25-21 victory in the opening frame. The Foresters countered with a 25-20 triumph in the following set, then seized the lead with a 25-19 win in the third. Marian, however, knotted up the match with a 25-16 decision in the fourth. The Knights then posted a 15-6 victory in the fifth to escape Platt Arena with the win.

Huntington, 9-10, 4-5 in Crossroads League play, got 16 kills from freshman Breanna Metz, 10 from rookie Brandy Michie and nine from senior Danielle Gurwell. Freshman Jenna Tacosik and junior Brenna Levings helped fuel the offense with 21 and 20 assists, respectively. Tacosik got in on the scoring with two aces.

Defensively, the Foresters got double-digit dig totals from four players. Senior Mikayla Carpenter and freshman Ariene Butler, both former Huntington North High School standouts, led the quartet with 14 digs apiece. Senior Kate Cobb produced 12 digs while Levings notched 10.

With the victory, Marian runs its record to 15-3, 7-1 in league action.
