Eckert continues on but Viking netmen fall

A win at first singles was all the Huntington North High School boys’ tennis team could muster against Adams Central in a season-ending 1-4 loss in the opening round of the Norwell Sectional on Wednesday, Sept. 27.

Senior Auden Eckert recorded the Vikings’ lone victory, beating Jaxson Rinkenberger. After dropping the first set, 2-6, Eckert rebounded with wins of 6-2, 6-1 to take the match. With the win, he advances to the state singles tournament, which is set to commence the week of Oct. 2.

No other match went more than two sets for Huntington North, which finishes the season 7-9.

At second singles, senior Matt Karst fell to Cam Burkhart, 0-6, 3-6. In the third tilt, freshman Thomas Schweller got dropped by Adam Busse, 2-6, 1-6.

Doubles play saw the Vikings’ second duo of senior Jarret Gray and junior Adam Zahn lose to Kade Moser and Dylan Hurst, 3-6, 3-6. In the No. 1 match, juniors Spencer Atkinson and Clark Kitchen suffered an 0-6, 2-6 defeat to Kyle Arnold and Lucas Harvey to round out the team’s day.
