HU spikers 1-1 on first day at Lykowski Memorial Tourney

The Huntington University volleyball team went 1-1 on the first day of the Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament on Friday, Oct. 13, at Indiana Tech.

The Foresters, 12-14, started off the day with a 1-3 loss to the host Knights before bouncing back with a 3-2 victory over Indiana University Southeast.

Against IU Southeast, the Foresters won the opening set, 25-17, before losing the following two frames, 21-25, 19-25. Coach Kyle Shondell’s squad knotted things up with a 25-22 victory in the fourth set before taking the match with a 15-12 triumph in the fifth.

Junior Tailor Schultheis led Huntington with 19 kills. Senior Josie Beaver registered 12 kills while senior Danielle Gurwell racked up 10.

Freshman Jenna Tacosik and senior Emily Hubby supported their efforts with 22 and 18 assists, respectively.

Defensively, senior Kate Cobb paced the Foresters with 28 digs. Senior Mikayla Carpenter added 11 digs while junior Haley Longley notched 10.

Beaver was a force at the net, logging two solo blocks while assisting on six others.

Versus Indiana Tech, Huntington took the opening set, 25-17, but couldn’t sustain that momentum and fell in the following three frames, 19-25, 18-25, 18-25.

Beaver produced 12 kills for the Forester offense while Schultheis and Gurwell both contributed 10.

Tacosik helped facilitate the scoring with 27 assists.

On the defensive side, Cobb amassed 27 digs while freshman Lauren Cresse had a hand in five blocks, one of which was a solo.
