Foresters 0-2 on second day of Lykowski Tourney

The Huntington University volleyball team went 0-2 on the second day of the Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 14, at Indiana Tech.

The Foresters suffered a pair of 2-3 defeats, falling to Lawrence Tech University and Indiana University Kokomo. The losses brought Huntington’s record at the tournament to 1-3. The Foresters’ record on the season stands at 12-16.

Against Lawrence Tech, the Foresters lost the opening set, 12-25, before bouncing back with a 25-16 victory in the second. After dropping the third frame, 17-25, Huntington knotted up the match with a 26-24 triumph in the fourth. The Blue Devils had the final cheer, though, taking the fifth set, 15-13.

Junior Tailor Schultheis paced the Forester offense with 17 kills. Senior Danielle Gurwell tallied 15 kills while senior Josie Beaver notched 11.

Freshman Jenna Tacosik supported their efforts with 36 assists. Senior Emily Hubby also lent the offense a helping hand, supplying 18 assists. Hubby got in on the scoring with two aces.

Defensively, senior Kate Cobb led Huntington with 32 digs. Senior Mikayla Carpenter chipped in 13 digs while freshman Ariene Butler amassed 10.

The IU Kokomo match followed the same script as the Lawrence Tech tilt, with the Foresters and their foe alternating wins. Huntington took the first set, 25-23, and lost the second, 18-25, before triumphing in the third, 25-23, and falling in the fourth, 13-25. The Cougars then triumphed in the final frame, 15-8.

Gurwell and Beaver paced the Foresters with 17 and 15 kills, respectively.

Hubby contributed 26 assists to the team’s offensive effort while Tacosik supplied 20.

Cobb and Carpenter did their part to stymie IU Kokomo’s offense with 44 and 20 digs, respectively. Cobb’s total was a career high.

Beaver and freshman Lauren Cresse made an impact at the net, assisting on five blocks apiece.
