Lady Vike Scheiber heading to state cross country meet

Huntington North High School senior Chloe Scheiber punched her own ticket to the state cross country meet next week with a 10th place overall finish at the New Haven Girls’ Cross County Semi-state on Saturday, Oct. 21, at The Plex, in Fort Wayne.

Scheiber crossed the finish line in 19:08.32 to claim 10th place overall and seventh among team competitors, giving her one of the 10 spots given to the top finishers whose teams did not advance to state, as the Lady Vikings placed 11th as a team.

The Lady Vikings scored 269 points for their finish, with Northridge claiming the sixth and final team spot with 183 points.

Junior Alena Miller ran second for the Lady Vikings with 21st place among team runners in a time of 19:47.56, and freshman Hanna Whitney placed 64th in 20:48.23. Junior Kyler Hoopingarner claimed 87th in 21:29.70 and sophomore Kendyl Coles placed 90th in 21:39.20.

Seniors Emma Melcher and Charlotte Borland rounded out the HNHS squad, placing 97th and 109th, respectively, in 21:55.39 and 22:23.82.

Carroll won the race with 77 points, placing three runners in the top 10. Penn was second with 131 points, Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger was third with 161 points, Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran placed fourth one point further back and Homestead was fifth with 175 points.

Competing as an individual, Tyler Schwartz of DeKalb won the individual race in 18:05.37, almost 16 seconds ahead of runner-up Sydney Lambert, of Norwell.

The state meet is Saturday, Oct. 28, at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, in Terre Haute, at 1:45 p.m.
