Forester volleyball beats MVNU in home finale

The Huntington University volleyball team topped visiting Mount Vernon Nazarene University, 3-1, in its final home match of the regular season on Friday, Oct. 27.

The win was the first ever for Huntington’s senior class over Mount Vernon. The victory also snapped a four-match skid for the Foresters, who improve to 13-18, 7-9 in Crossroads League play.

Coach Kyle Shondell’s squad lost the first set, 11-25, before bouncing back with wins of 25-23, 25-16, 25-18.

Senior Josie Beaver led the Huntington offense with 12 kills. Senior Danielle Gurwell chipped in 11 kills while freshman Lauren Cresse added eight.

Jenna Tacosik fueled the scoring with 38 assists. The freshman also generated some offense of her own with three aces.

Defensively, the Foresters got 19 digs from senior Kate Cobb, with seniors Emily Hubby and Mikayla Carpenter contributing 13 and 11, respectively.

Cresse had a hand in four blocks, one of which was a solo.

With the loss, Mount Vernon falls to 18-16, 5-12 in league action. The Cougars got 13 kills from Alyson Near, 35 assists from Katelyn Dufur and 19 digs from Ashley Gingerich.
