USPS announces holiday mailing deadlines

Cards and packages need to get in the mail soon in order to reach their destinations before Christmas, the United States Postal Service says.

Military mail deadlines are Nov. 27 for space available mail, Dec. 4 for parcel airlift mail, Dec. 11 for priority mail service or first-class mail service and Dec. 16 for priority mail express military service.

An exception is for military mail addressed to APO/FPO/DPE AE ZIP 093, which has a deadline of Dec. 4 for parcel airlift mail, priority mail service and first-class mail service. Priority mail express military service is not available.

The Postal Service has created a free Military Care Kit based on the items most frequently requested by military families.

The kit contains two priority mail APO/FPO/DPO flat rate boxes, two priority mail medium flat rate boxes, priority mail tape, priority mail address labels and appropriate customs forms.

To order the kit, call 800-610-8734.

Guidelines for packing, addressing and shipping items to U.S. troops can be found at usps.com/ship/apo -fpo-dpo.htm.

To order flat rate boxes featuring the “America Supports You” logo, go to usps.com/freeboxes.

For international destinations, the deadlines do not take into account the time needed for customs clearance. Senders should allocate extra transit days for delivery outside major cities. Holiday shipping deadlines for international mail are:
