Celebrating Solanus

Photo provided.

A group from the Fort Wayne-South Bend Catholic Diocese, including a contingent from Huntington County, participates in the beatification Mass for Rev. Solanus Casey on Saturday, Nov. 18, at Ford Field in Detroit, MI. They include (from right) Steve Rennells, of Monroeville; Maria and Gary Stebbins, of Fort Wayne; and Dan and Jackie Shaffer, of Huntington. The celebration drew 66,000 people, including a group of 174 from the local Catholic diocese organized by SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Huntington. Members of the group wore or carried red bandanas, something the priest was known for.  Casey, who lived at St. Felix Friary in Huntington for 10 years, is credited with apparently miraculous cures. Beatification is a major step toward an official declaration of sainthood by the Catholic Church.
