Vikings to 4-0 with win over Warsaw

A dominant first half propelled the Huntington North High School boys’ varsity basketball team over host Warsaw, 44-36, on Saturday, Dec. 2.

Coach Craig Teagle’s squad owned both ends of the court in the opening half. Offensively, the Vikings sizzled the nets, draining 11 of 16 shots from the field – with a 5 of 7 effort from three-point land – for 68.8 percent. Defensively, they let the Tigers convert only three of 19 field goal attempts for a mere 15.8 percent. Huntington North charged out to a 16-3 lead in the first quarter and upped its advantage to 28-8 by halftime.

The Vikings proceeded to score the first six points of the third quarter to craft their biggest advantage of the game at 34-8, before the Tigers closed out the frame with eight points to trim the deficit to 34-16 heading into the fourth. The final frame saw the hosts erupt for 20 points, but the Vikes countered with 10 to keep their lead safe.

With the win, Huntington North improves to 4-0 for the first time since the 2005-06 season.

Junior Zach Daugherty led the Vikings with 15 points on 5 of 6 shooting. Junior Trey Williams added 10 points and four assists.

Huntington North finished 14 of 26 from the field for 53.8 percent and 11 of 18 at the charity stripe for 61.1 percent.

Warsaw, 2-2, got nine points from Tyler Metzinger. Zach Riley collected a game-high nine rebounds, which helped give the hosts a 30-28 edge on the glass.

For the game, the Tigers converted 12 of 53 field goal attempts for 22.6 percent, which included a 3 of 21 showing from beyond the arc for 14.3 percent. They performed better at the line, where they went 9 of 10 for 90 percent.

Huntington North lost the junior varsity contest, 65-27.

Sophomores Deven Newcomb and Aidan Hosler paced the Vikings with seven points apiece.
