Mason, Mautz, York lead Viking swimboys past Blackford

The trio of Conner Mason, Keegan Mautz and Nathan York led the Huntington North High School boys’ swim team to a 79-71 victory over visiting Blackford on Tuesday, Dec. 5.

Each member of the triumvirate logged first and second place finishes, plus swam legs on two first place relay teams.

Mason won the 100-yard backstroke, clocking it at 1:18.11. The senior put forth his silver effort in the 100-yard butterfly, touching the wall in 1:18.34.

Mautz took the 200-yard freestyle, posting a time of 2:23.13. The junior earned runner-up honors in the 100-yard breaststroke, coming home in 1:21.75.

York was tops in the 100-yard freestyle, stopping the timer in 1:02.20. The junior swam to second in the 200-yard individual medley, logging a time of 2:38.17.

The three teamed up with freshman Cole Davidson to win the 200-yard medley relay in 2:07.35. They later formed a quartet with junior Aidan Miller to take the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:52.47. The latter relay also saw the Vikings place third, with the foursome of senior Reid Dillion, junior Mason Anderson, sophomore Jamal Werling and Davidson finishing in 2:12.19.

Miller was a silver finisher in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in at :27.80. Dillion also put forth a runner-up effort, taking second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:26.88.

Miller and Dillion teamed up with Anderson and Werling to place second in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The foursome finished in 4:46.86.

Anderson was a two-time bronze finisher for Huntington North. He placed third in the 50 and 100 freestyles, stopping the timer in :29.66 and 1:09.02, respectively.

Werling and Davidson rounded out the team’s top-three showings. Werling took third in the 200 freestyle in 3:05.11 while Davidson claimed the same place in the 500-yard freestyle in 6:59.38.
