Lady Vikes put defensive hammer down on New Haven in big win

The Huntington North High School girls’ varsity basketball team got off to a nice lead early and then put the defensive hammer down in the second half in a 61-29 laugher over visiting New Haven on Friday, Dec. 8.

The Lady Vikings, 5-5, took a 17-9 lead after the first quarter and carried a 27-19 lead into the locker room at halftime. Coach Heidi Lawson’s squad then notched up the defense, limiting the Lady Bulldogs to only four points in the third frame and just six in the final quarter.

Maddy Robrock led a balanced Huntington North offense with 14 points, while Rileigh Johnson and Karmen Koch each notched 13 points and Reece Colcesser chipped in nine.

The Lady Vikes hit 23 of 45 field goal attempts for 51.1 percent, including a 4 of 6 showing from three-point land, and added 10 of 18 from the free-throw line.

New Haven, which was led by Sanecia Nard’s 10 points, hit only 9 of 32 shots from the field for 28.1 percent. The Lady Bulldogs hit 10 of 16 from the free-throw line for 62.5 percent.

Robrock led the Lady Vikings on the boards with eight caroms. Larissa Johnson had six boards.

Larissa Johnson and Hollyn Anderson each had four assists to lead the team.
