HNHS swimgirls come up just short against Bellmont

The Huntington North High School girls’ swim team got two wins apiece from Allie Aschliman and Laney Shaw, but came up short to visiting Bellmont, 87-83.

Aschliman topped the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly while Shaw triumphed in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyles.

Aschliman, a sophomore, won the medley in 2:33.67 and the butterfly in 1:07.19. Shaw, also a sophomore, took the shorter freestyle in :28.07 and the longer one in 1:02.29.

Shaw and Aschliman also swam legs in the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay. The two competed in the medley with junior Macy Lange and sophomore Alyssa Brinkman and, together, they won the event in 2:10.08. The freestyle saw Shaw, Aschliman and Lange compete with sophomore Alayna Stroup and post a time of 4:18.19, good for second.

Lange rounded out the Lady Vikings’ individual wins with a gold showing in the 100-yard breaststroke, clocking in at 1:20.73. She also earned runner-up honors in the 500-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 6:37.85.

Stroup put forth silver and bronze efforts in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke, respectively. She finished the former race in 2:32.31 and the latter in 1:18.74. Brinkman claimed second in the 100 backstroke, stopping the timer in 1:15.45.

Bekah Brunner logged a pair of third-place showings for Huntington North, in the 200 IM and the 100 fly. The freshman finished the IM in 3:02.41 and the fly in 1:26.63. Junior Morgan Cogar rounded out the team’s podium finishes with a bronze effort in the 200 free, posting a time of 2:39.55.
