Vikes erase late New Haven lead, win in OT

The Huntington North High School boys’ varsity basketball team erased a 10-point New Haven lead in the final quarter to tie the game in regulation, then ran away from the Bulldogs in overtime for a 63-55 win Friday night, Dec. 29, in the Holiday Hoops Tournament, at Huntington University’s Platt Arena.

Zach Daugherty scored 20 points to lead four Vikings in double figures as HNHS, 10-2, trailed New Haven 39-27 in the third quarter. The Vikes went into the final frame still down by 10 at 44-34 heading into the final period, but outscored New Haven 16-6 over the final eight minutes to send the game into overtime at 50-all.

The Vikes then outscored the Bulldogs, 5-4, in the extra frame, 13-5 for the win.

Mitch Geller added 15 points, a game-high 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals to the HNHS cause. Hank Pulver notched 13 points and Sawyer Stoltz tossed in 10 points.

The teams played to a 15-15 tie after the first frame, but New Haven pulled ahead 29-25 by halftime.

Brecar Clark led New Haven with 15 points. Zach Latham and Donynn Lewis each tallied 11.

The Vikings hit 22 of 38 shots from the field for 57.9 percent on the night. They added a 13 of 17 effort at the free-throw line for 76.5 percent, with Daugherty hitting all eight of his tries at the stripe.

Daugherty also helped out with a team-high four assists.

The Bulldogs hit 20 of 53 shots from the field for 37.7 percent. They only went to the line six times and hit four for 66.7 percent.
