Brown, DeKalb spoil Lady Vikes' senior night

DeKalb and star player Leigha Brown spoiled senior night for the Huntington North High School girls’ varsity basketball team, handing the Lady Vikings a 74-68 defeat on Friday, Jan. 26.

After leading 17-16 after the first quarter and 34-30 at halftime, the Lady Vikings watched Brown and the Lady Barons turn the game upside down in the third. The visitors poured in 24 points while holding Coach Heidi Lawson’s squad to just 10 to take a 54-44 lead. DeKalb then protected that advantage in the final frame to send Huntington North to 11-11, 4-3 in Northeast 8 Conference play.

Brown finished with 39 points for the Lady Barons, 11-11, 2-5 in the NE8. The University of Nebraska commit did much of her damage at the free-throw line, where she drained all but one of her 19 shots.

Senior Hollyn Anderson and junior Maddy Robrock paced the Lady Vikings with 15 points apiece. Senior Rileigh Johnson added 13 points to the team’s offensive effort while corralling nine rebounds, helping her squad to a 23-18 advantage on the boards. Senior Karmen Koch chipped in 10 points while dishing out six assists.

Huntington North converted 24 of 50 field goal attempts for 48 percent and 16 of 22 freebie opportunities for 72.7 percent.

In addition to Brown’s big point total, DeKalb got a pair of 13-point efforts from Brooke-Destinee Lockwood and Addison Ruby. The Lady Barons went 23 of 40 from the field for 57.5 percent and 25 of 30 at the charity stripe for 83.3 percent.

The Lady Vikings won big in the junior varsity contest, 60-19.
