Kiersten Smith has truly worked her way up the ranks of the Huntington Rodeway Inn and has become its new general manager.

The former Ossian resident started in September 2016 as a housekeeper. Last March, when the hotel’s new owners took over, she became the head housekeeper. She was promoted to general manager in December.

“When I started as a housekeeper I became friends with the old general manager, and I was kind of like her assistant/head housekeeper, so I helped her with stuff,” Smith explains. “Then after she moved on that was my goal, was to get up to the general manager position.”

Smith graduated from Norwell High School in 2009 and attended Brown Mackie College. She has since moved to Huntington with her husband and two children and is eager to get to know the community.

“I’m learning all about marketing right now and getting involved with the town,” she says. “I attended the town hall meeting and went to the annual chamber of commerce dinner. Right now I’m just trying to get more involved in knowing some more people around here.”

Smith also works part time at The Parkview Boys & Girls Club of Huntington County in the “tween” room, hanging out with the sixth-graders.

With renovations to the building, new items in rooms and a new staff, Smith’s goals for the Rodeway involve changing customers’ expectations about the inn. She plans to use her customer service and problem solving skills to effect much of those changes.

“My goal is for them to see what it is now and not what it used to be,” she says. “I want guests to see what it is now.”

The Rodeway offers a combination party room plus swimming pool area for birthday parties, as well as corporate rates and new packages planned for the near future, Smith says.

The Rodeway Inn is located at 2820 Hotel Ave., Huntington.

Smith may be reached at the hotel through the week between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. by calling 359-9000.
