HELP to award scholarship in memory of board member Decker

Huntington County HELP Inc. will award a scholarship in memory of board member John Decker. The John Decker Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of up to $1,500, will be awarded to a Huntington County resident who is a high school senior or a student enrolled as a full-time or part-time student in post-high school studies and has a qualifying disability as identified below. The John Decker Scholarship will be awarded to a qualified applicant who meets one of the following criteria:

The scholarship applicant has had an IEP (Individualized Educational Plan) during their years in school. A copy of their most recent IEP shall be included with the application. If unable to obtain a copy of their IEP, the applicant must obtain a letter from the director of special education services, in the school district where the IEP was established, identifying the student as having a qualifying disability.

The scholarship applicant has been a client of Vocational Rehabilitation Services (VRS), a program of the Bureau of Rehabilitation Service (BRS), which provides quality, individualized services to enhance and support people with disabilities to prepare for, obtain or retain employment. A written letter from the applicant’s VRS counselor signifying the student’s disability should be included with the application.

The student shall obtain documentation from their physician written in letter form to the HELP, Inc. scholarship committee, verifying the presence of a disability and identifying the conditions that qualify the student as eligible for a HELP, Inc. scholarship as a student with a disability.

Additional scholarships may be awarded to students with disabilities at the discretion of the scholarship committee and the Board of Directors of Huntington County HELP, Inc.

To be considered for the John Decker scholarship all of the following must be included:

• Completed application.

• An official high school transcript.

• A current letter of recommendation from a high school teacher or from an employer.

• Documentation of disability as specified above.
Scholarship applications will be accepted Jan. 22, through March 9.
