Alvin E. 'Gene' Smith

Alvin Eugene "Gene" Smith, 84, of Rushville, and a former resident of Andrews, died Dec. 7, 2008, at 12:10 a.m. at Flatrock River Lodge, Rushville.

Mr. Smith was a retired teacher. He taught government and economics at Niles High School in Niles, MI, from 1955 to 1986. He had previously taught and coached at high schools in Wabash, Kosciusko and Marshall counties in Indiana. He graduated from Andrews High School in 1942, then earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Huntington College and his master's degree from Indiana University.

He served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II, from November 1942 to August 1943.

He was born May 11, 1924, in Andrews to Frank and Estella Snyder Smith. He married Mable Deloris King Copp on April 2, 1978. His wife survives.

Additional survivors include a son, Randall E. Smith, of Zeeland, MI; two daughters, Cynthia Smith-Carter, of Houston, TX, and Christine Hopkins, of Michigan; a stepson, Terry E. Copp, of Marquette, MI; two stepdaughters, Deloris Morris, of Lake Worth, FL, and Patricia A. Brand, of Hollywood, FL; six grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; four great-grandsons; and four stepgreat-granddaughters.

A funeral service was held Dec. 10, 2008, at the Main Street Christian Church, Rushville.

Entombment was at the East Hill Shrine Mausoleum, Rushville.
