School board gives Shafer authority to cut up to two teaching posts - just in case

The Huntington County Community School Corporation Board of Trustees gave Superintendent Tracey Shafer the authority to cut up to two teaching positions for the 2009-2010 school year during the board's meeting on March 23.

Even so, Shafer said he is not likely to make any cuts.

"It's not something we're looking to do," he said. "But if it became necessary, we would have the option."

Reductions in staff are dependent on the number of students enrolled for the next school year, Shafer said.

"Numbers are declining slightly in the elementary schools," he noted, adding that kindergarten and high school numbers also tend to fluctuate.

Several teachers are retiring at the end of this school year, so Shafer is hopeful he won't have to let anyone go.

"We might have to move some people around," he said. "These are kind of just in cases."
