School board approves adoption of new social studies textbooks

The Huntington County Community School Corporation Board of Trustees approved the adoption of new social studies books for all grade levels during the May 11 School Board meeting.

The board approved the adoption of all books recommended by a committee of teachers and parents from each education levels - elementary, middle and high school - that reviewed various textbooks, narrowed the choices and then voted on those remaining.

A listing of those textbooks was posted to The TAB's Web site on April 29 titled "School board hears list of recommended textbooks."

A recommendation for textbooks was also presented to the board for the Huntington North High School Expository Writing class, which was approved as a dual credit class with Vincennes University and is pending approval as a dual credit class with Huntington University.

Both universities require the use of additional textbooks for the course, with Vincennes requiring the Longman Reader and the Concise Wadsworth Handbook. Huntington University uses a slightly different combination of textbooks, but will accept the same texts that Vincennes requires.

Adoption of the books will help to provide the greatest opportunity for students to pursue the dual credit opportunity and increase the rigor of the existing Expository Writing class, bringing it in line with collegiate expectations, note school officials. The books will be on display at the Administrative Service Center, 1360 Warren Rd., until the Tuesday, May 26, school board meeting, when trustees vote on the adoption. That meeting was moved from Monday, May 25, which is the Memorial Day holiday.
