Huntington County sheriff warns resident of local car wrap scam

An out-of-the-blue offer to get paid for wrapping your vehicle in advertising is likely a scam designed to part you from your money, Huntington County Sheriff Terry Stoffel says.

A Huntington woman told Stoffel she was contacted by someone who said he represented Monster Energy and offered to pay her $300 a week to drive around with her car wrapped in an advertisement for the popular energy drink.

YSB to offer suicide prevention training on Aug. 25

The Youth Services Bureau (YSB) and the Teen Suicide Prevention Task Force provides community education to adults through a suicide prevention training called QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer).

The training covers statistics, warning signs, risk factors, how to talk with those who may be contemplating suicide and where to get help.

The class is free and offered by the Youth Services Bureau. The next class will be held on Aug. 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Youth Services Bureau office located at 1344 Maple Drive, Huntington.

Community Garden offers fresh vegetables free for the picking

The Helping Hands Community Garden is currently open for harvest on Mondays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to11 a.m. as well as Wednesday afternoons from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

All community members are welcome. Community members and those who harvest from the garden are asked to work during harvest times or on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Green beans, broccoli, yellow squash, zucchini, potatoes, tomatoes, herbs, peppers, cucumbers and kale are currently ready to pick.

The garden sits next to Huntington North High School on Viking Lane and Jefferson Street.

KidSafe Safety Day set for Aug. 22

Operation Kidsafe Safety Day will be held on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Pace Chevrolet, 239 Hauenstein Rd., Huntington.

The free event includes lunch for participating families, including hot dogs, cotton candy, popcorn and water. They will also receive digital prints for a photo safety program and a goodie bag for each child.

Special equipment will be used for the lifetime safety bio document for children with photo and digital fingerprints. The service, recommended for children ages 1 to 18, is free and private.

Victory Noll announces new retreats

Victory Noll Center, in conjunction with Lutheran Military Veterans and Families Ministry Office, will host a pair of weekend retreats for female military veterans.

The first retreat is set for Aug. 28 through 30, with the second scheduled for Dec. 4 through 6.

The retreat is being held for any female veteran, regardless of age and from any service period, including those currently in active service.

‘Ride 2 Provide’ kicks off from Markle Park on Saturday, Aug. 15

The 10th annual Ride 2 Provide event is taking place Saturday, Aug. 15. Check-in begins at 11 a.m. at Markle Park, with the first bike out at 12:10 p.m. The last bike in will be at 4:30 p.m. at the park. All proceeds of the event will benefit Tiffany Lemmon.

There also will be a raffle, bake sale, door prizes, 50/50 drawing, dunk tank, kids raffle, face painting, pony rides, coloring contest and bounce houses.

Wiley spending summer at Cards’ Class A-Advanced team

Brett Wiley, a former baseball star at Huntington North High School, has spent the summer playing for the Palm Beach Cardinals, a Class A-Advanced Minor League Baseball team affiliated with the St. Louis Cardinals of Major League Baseball.

Wiley was drafted by St. Louis in the 13th round of the MLB draft in 2012.

Currently, Wiley is playing second base and batting third for Palm Beach, which is based in Jupiter, FL, and plays in the Florida State League.

Taste of Roanoke features a mini-feast and a show

The annual Taste of Roanoke event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Sponsored by the Roanoke Chamber of Commerce, it features local restaurants, non-profit organizations and civic groups serving specialty food items outside on Roanoke’s downtown Main Street.

Items served for the evening could include grilled tenderloin sandwiches, barbecued ribs, gumbo, Wagyu (Kobe) beef burgers, roasted chicken, corn on the cob, sloppy joes, ice cream, gelato, smoothies and more. There is no admission charged, but a fee is charged for the food.
