Jack W. Weesner

Jack W. Weesner, 84, of Wabash, IN and formerly of Lagro, died Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at 9:30 a.m. at Wellbrooke of Wabash.

Mr. Weesner was a 1948 graduate of Linlawn High School in Wabash County. He was a chief warrant officer in the United States Navy. He served during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, retiring in 1972. He also worked at CMI in Wabash, retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Lagro American Legion.

Sewer plant blasting could rattle residents

That rumbling noise and earth-shaking feeling that residents on Huntington's west side may be experiencing twice a day isn't coming from phantom thunderstorms; it's blasting going on at the city sewer plant.

Anthony Goodnight, the city's director of Public Works and Engineering Services, says the blasting is part of the Rabbit Run Project, the third phase of the city's long-term control plan. He says the blasting began at the plant on Hitzfield Street Tuesday, March 18, and will continue about eight weeks.

Doris M. 'Dorie' Hoopingarner

Doris M. "Dorie" Hoopingarner, 47, of Warren, IN, died Monday, March 17, 2014, at 5:12 pm. at her home.

Mrs. Hoopingarner was currently employed as custodian at the Warren United Church of Christ. She had previously worked for several years at Heritage Pointe and Hy-Line, in Warren. She attended Huntington North High School and attended the Warren United Church of Christ, where she was a member of the Sisters in Faith.

Roanoke council to draft plan for CEDIT expenditures

The Roanoke Town Council discussed crafting an outline for the town's CEDIT plan during its Tuesday, March 18, meeting.

The Huntington County Commissioners require every town council to file a plan detailing how it intends to use CEDIT monies during the year. Clerk-Treasurer JoAnne Kirchner indicated that she would draft an outline for council's next meeting, April 1.

HU baseball team opens conference season with 2-1 loss

The Huntington University baseball team opened the conference portion of its season on Monday, March 17, in Lakeland, FL, dropping a 2-1 decision to Mount Vernon Nazarene University in game one before rained suspended the nightcap.

While it was a low-scoring affair, it wasn't for lack of solid hitting as the Foresters, 4-6, pounded out nine hits to the Cougars' 16. The 11-inning game saw 23 batters stranded between the two teams.

Freshman Jared Green went 3 for 5 at the plate to pace Huntington offensively. He also tallied his team's lone RBI in his first at-bat.

Forester 9 rallies back to beat SUNY Canton

The Huntington University baseball team overcame six errors by pounding out 21 hits in its 14-13 nine-inning win over SUNY Canton on the opening day of the Russ/Matt Tournament on Sunday, March 16, in Lakeland, FL.

SUNY Canton opened up an 8-1 lead through the first four innings before Huntington, 4-5, got things rolling in the sixth. With the bases loaded, Dalton Combs pounded out a single to plate three runs. Dylan Henricks doubled in Combs and then Avery Sneed and TJ Landstrand each registered run-scoring singles to pull the Foresters within one at 8-7.

Crestview grapplers finish fourth at NELMSC

The Crestview Middle School wrestling team closed out its season with a fourth place finish at the Northeast Lakes Middle School Conference championship meet at Whitko Middle School on Saturday, March 15.

Adrien George, Gavin Rosen, Ricky Haught, Charlie Agnew, Keaton Smeltzer and Colten Hasty were weight class champions for the Cougars.

Place winners for Crestview were Veronica Russell and Xander Kreul, second place; Jacob Foster, Eric Reust and Mason Landrum, fourth place; Cade MacAleese, fifth place; and Shawn Young, sixth place.
