Donald D. Ramsey

Donald D. Ramsey, 88, of Huntington, IN, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012, at 12:46 p.m. at Parkview Huntington Hospital.

Mr. Ramsey was a veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Navy from 1941 to 1945 as a gunner's mate second class. He also served during the Korean War as a corporal with the United States Army.

Mr. Ramsey retired in 1964 from the Huntington Fire Department. He had also worked in the maintenance department of Memcor for 16 years. After retirement, he worked with Bailey-Love Mortuary for several years.

Lady Vikes edge Homestead in first round at volleyball sectional

The Huntington North High School varsity volleyball team edged Homestead in five games on Thursday, Oct. 18, in the opening round of the Fort Wayne South Side Volleyball Sectional.

The Lady Vikings, 19-13, will play Jay County on Saturday, Oct. 20, in second round action after nipping the Lady Spartans, 17-15, in the fifth and deciding game of their match.

HU soccerwomen hold off USF

Kaitlyn Dreman scored twice in less than two minutes in the first half and the Huntington University women's soccer team held off visiting Saint Francis in the second half to gain a 3-2 win on Thursday, Oct. 18, at Huntington North High School.

Lisa Underwood's goal at 58:55 off an assist from Brittany Hartman gave HU what looked like a secure 3-0 lead, but Saint Francis fought back to within one with just over four minutes left, although the Foresters were able to hang on for their 12th win in 16 games this season.

Pinson P. Hicks

Pinson P. Hicks, 70, of Huntington, IN, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012, at 5:15 a.m. at St. Joseph Hospital, Fort Wayne.

Mr. Hicks was a machinist and had worked at H.K. Porter and Pulley-Kellam and retired from Orton Crane. He played guitar and sang with bands across Indiana, Ohio and Michigan. He was a life member of Eagles Lodge 823 and an honorary member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2689, Huntington.

He was born Feb. 16, 1942, in Green Cove Springs, FL, to Pearce and Laura Carter Hicks. He married Lois Jane Biddle on March 30, 1963. His wife survives.

Ola M. Tackett

Ola Mae Tackett, 74, of Andrews, IN, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012, at Norwood Health and Rehabilitation Center, in Huntington.

Mrs. Tackett graduated in 1956 from Dorton High School in Dorton, KY. She was a former Andrews town clerk and was a member of Bethesda Free Will Baptist Church, in Andrews.

She was born June 10, 1938, in Pikeville, KY, to Scott and Flossie Elswick Tackitt. She married Delano Tackett on Jan. 2, 1959, in Huntington. Her husband preceded her in death on June 26, 2010.

Roanoke court will no longer handle traffic tickets

Traffic violations in Huntington County will now be filed exclusively through the Huntington Superior Court and no longer through the Roanoke town court, Huntington County Prosecutor Amy Richison has determined.

Richison says she made the decision for two reasons. The first reason is to bring Huntington County into compliance with an Indiana Supreme Court ruling covering assignment of cases to specific courts.

HU volleyball team struggles in three-set loss to IWU

The Huntington University volleyball team struggled to generate offense against host Indiana Wesleyan University and lost 9-25, 13-25, 14-25, on Wednesday, Oct. 17.

Melissa Grossman had the largest share of the Foresters' 20 kills, coming up with eight. By comparison, the Wildcats had 42 kills, and three players with at least eight.

Jensen Carnahan dished out 15 assists and Katie Bowers scraped up 11 digs.

The Foresters fall to 4-19 and 2-12 in Crossroads League play.

 

Crestview 7th grade volleyball team falls in tourney championship

The Crestview Middle School seventh grade volleyball team won its first match to play for the championship at the NELSMC tournament at Warsaw High School on Saturday, Oct. 13, but fell short at bringing home the title.

The Cougars defeated Lakeview 25-22, 19-25, 15-12 in the first match.

Kaylee Platt had 13 service points and Katie Jamison had 10 to go with six spikes. Karmen Koch, Rileigh Johnson and Johanna Dohrman each had six service points, with Koch and Johnson also contributing eight and nine spikes, respectively.

Roanoke council unhappy with move to close town court

The Roanoke Town Council and Judge Bob Turpin, of the Roanoke town court, say they are displeased with a recent move by Huntington County Prosecutor Amy Richison that will likely result in the closure of the town court.

The council was informed of upcoming changes in the court's operation on Friday, Oct. 12, says Troy Karshner, president of the council, said during the council's Oct. 16 meeting.

Turpin voiced his disappointment. The council sympathized with Turpin and considered how the decision would affect the town, such as from a monetary standpoint.
